The Sea Hawk
Hi Guys,
I have a question regarding two of the release for Erich Wolfgang Korngold's score for The Sea Hawk.
Between the Tsunami (Tsunami TSU 137 ) and the Varese (Varese Sarabande VCD 47304 ) discs, which is the best version to get in terms of sound quality?
Thanks in advance
P

Hello Paul,
the Tsunami version is derived from Korngold's original acetates, and while the sound restoration is quite good (considering the age of the recording), the CD is almost unlistenable due to re-channeling, means that the producers added some reverb to enhance the original mono verison to stereo.
The Varese version contrary, is a re-recording done in the early 1980's and therefore has better sound quality. Unfortunately, Varese's version is not as complete as the Tsunami version, as it has been recorded to fit on a LP.
According to some rumours, Naxos plans to record a 2 CD set with the complete score. However, I don't know any further details about that.
Hope this helps you.
Best regards,
Stefan

Hi, I have both and HANDS DOWN the tsunami is the winner. No matter the sound quality, the Original is ALWAYS the best in my opinion. Same way w/Captain Blood, Adv. of Robin Hood and Don Juan.etc
