I was after this music myself, for ages but I never got it.It was advertised on the inside of a series of RCA titles afew years back.(I managed to get nosferatu;Prince and the pauper/mark twain).Though I never saw metropolis in the shops and when I tried to order,it was either gone already or nver actually available. So, big sigh, weboth missed it.

Do you think there's any way I'd be able to get a copy? Does your friend still have it?

Although the Wikipedia entry on *Metropolis* was edited to reflect it, I had not known until the last issue of *Time* that a 16mm print of *Metropolis* was discovered recently in a museum in Argentina -- a COMPLETE print!!!! This is astonishing news as all previous versions, including the Georgio Moroder, were incomplete. The Wiki entry said the print is scratched pretty badly but not to the point it cannot be restored. (Frankly, as this is my favorite silent film, it was inexplicable how it survived only in incomplete form at all, so the news was doubly exciting.) The Wiki entry mentions that Huppertz actually played many of the themes on piano on set as the film was shot, the better to give the players emotional support for their performances. It also notes that when the movie was originally screened, a full orchestra went along to play the score. My hunch is that someone -- Carmine Coppola where are you when we need you? -- will either add the Huppertz soundtrack score to the restored print (possibly by Criterion), or, in the best case scenario, the film will have a limited run with full orchestra in selected cities. This was done with Abel Gance's *Napolean* in the late 70s. And, yes, Francis Ford Coppola's dad conducted the orchestra that traveled with it. I was lucky enough to have caught a performance in San Antonio. Keep your fingers crossed!

If you are really interested in this score, then I suggest you attend the Traverse City Film Festival in Traverse City, Michigan on August 2. At noon that day, The Bijou Orchestra, one of the few professional theatre orchestras in the country will be performing the salon orchestration of this score with the film. Check out their website: thebijou.org. More info at the Traverse City Film Festival
