Never Say Never Again - Japanese CD Seven Seas KICP 384
Has anybody any knowledge about this release? It's listed here in the database without any picture, tracks whatsoever.
http://www.soundtrackcollector.com/catalog/soundtrackdetail.php?movieid=5727
By the way, I've listed the tracks for the LP with anotations to the corresponding CD tracks. Curiosity to be noted: the trumpet solo heared on the last track, side B, can not be found on the CD release. One only guesses why...

Sorry, can't help with this. The only reference I found on the web (at http://www.mds.mdh.se/~dat95jed/sndtrk.htm) says
"(Seven Seas/King Records KICP-384 - Japanese release, different tracks)" ...
Anyway what I wanted to say was that I like the track listing you wrote. Nice, comprehensive, informative.

Thank you!
This must be the same as listed in our database here ("Seven Seas KICP 384"). It should be removed quickly, because it's only a CD-R (produced in 1994) and not official at all! Here's what it says:
"Never Say Never Again (1983,94) Michel LeGrand (CD-R) (Seven Seas/King Records KICP-384 - Japanese release, different tracks)"
Many years ago there was a bootleg cassette of the LP floating around too.

Many thanks for the information on this.
I wasn't aware, that the "Never Say Never Again" CD is also incomplete. This all is quite a shame. One would expect, that at least the full LP programm is present on the CD re-issue.
But at least, it is much more complete than "Octopussy". Does anybody know, why they never managed it to get the John Barry instrumental "All Time High" on one of the CD re-issues?

emilio: but perhaps that means only the guy wrote the list owns a cd-r of the Japanese edition. The CD may be just-another-impossible-to-find Japanese release.
shicorp: not much ideas, except for that when it comes to do deluxe reeditions, the people at EMI are not the people at Varese. Maybe they didn't want to invest into this "outsider" 007 score (at least that's how I see it) because they didn't believe they'll get it back or simply were too lazy. I am sure there must have been much more material for Octopussy, The Man with the golden gun ...............

I don't think it is an official release.
Anyway, I mailed him some questions about it and posted also this link to this discussion as well. Wait and see.
The trumpet solo (by Herb "Casino Royale" Alpert) is about 30 seconds long; even the liner notes in the Silva Screen CD edition mention it. Maybe they left it out by mistake.
I was never happy with the sound quality of this CD and hope somebody will release a definitive edition. Apart from that solo there are still a few cues unreleased:
* A short cue in the Shrublands sequence.
* The film features a different version of the "Jealousy" cue.
* A jazzy cue when Bond runs down the stairs in the French villa.
* The theme heard when Bond and Domino escape on horseback.

I've just received his answer in regard of this famous CD-R. It is to interesting not to be quoted in full:
"The fact that I write "CD-R" after it only means that in MY collection I only have a CD-R copy of it, as opposed to most disks where it dosen't say anything (means I have the original). Apparently it was released in Japan
(on a pressed commercial CD). I got the CD-R copy from a guy in Germany.I have no tracklist for it.
For Japanese releases, go here: (although none of them has it)

This soundtrack needs to be rereleased by someone who knows music. It's a shame that the instrumental version of the title song (produced by Sergio Mendes, featuring Herb Alpert's trumpet solo) was omitted from the Silva America CD. The Japanese edition includes the first 30 seconds of this track. Then it fades out!! Perhaps this indicates that it's more of a re-use fees and royalties issue rather than being a botched job; someone DECIDED to fade the track out after 30 seconds and they must have had a reason? (This is just speculation.)
Reportedly, the track was not on the Japanese LP either. So the only way out is to record it from the Laserdisk or similar.
However, several years ago I did find a Spanish(?) page that mentions a "versión instrumental". I never investigated it. Might however be the different track by the same name track which is on the Silva America CD as well:

Another quote, taken from John's website about the Mendes instrumental:
"Never Say Never Again (instrumental version of the Lani Hall theme song with trumpet solo by Herb Alpert, produced by Sergio Mendes) After years of searching, I found out that this gorgeous track was not included on either the Silva Screen CD or the Seven Seas LP or CD! The Japanese Seven Seas / King Records CD DOES include a 30 seconds version of this track, but then it fades out! Fortunately I have the track extracted from the DVD."

Now, I have at least two more indications that this CD really existed. My contacts from Japan confirmed me this edition was around in the early 90s. The release is long out of print now. At its time quite expensive, ie. double the price of the Silva Screen CD.
To be followed...
