What was the best-selling soundtrack the year that you were born?
A bit of research required here. What was the best-selling soundtrack the year that you were born (or at least a big best-seller)? I'm not gonna tell you mine 'cause I'll feel so old. Oh, what the hell, it was GOLDFINGER (If you don't count A HARD DAY'S NIGHT, MARY POPPINS or MY FAIR LADY).

My year is a bit hard to tell for me, but I believe it might have been OUT OF AFRICA.
I doubt it was DrĂ´le de Samedi.

This is a bit unfair on my part. I was thinking of the U.S. OUT OF AFRICA was the top (non song) score (tied with A VIEW TO A KILL at #38 on BILLBOARD'S album chart). BEVERLY HILLS COP was the top song score that year (#1) in January '85.

I guess the top seller of my year was also "Out of Africa". Great score, by the way. One of Barry's best and one of the only scores, that makes me proud to be born in the 1980's.

1987 was actually FLASHDANCE which spent 18 weeks at #1. Holy Moly! The ultimate decade for the song soundtracks. (LA BAMBA was also a #1 soundtrack in 1987).

Don't know what was the best selling that year but the Oscar went to : Love Is A Many-Splendored Thing by Alfred Newman. Man with the Golden Arm was good selling that year too ! So filmfactsman do cheer up ! Goldfinger isn't that long ago !

I would never have guessed it but LOVE ME OR LEAVE ME was the #1 soundtrack of 1955 (17 weeks at #1). The others you mentioned were also big best-sellers along with OKLAHOMA!, DEEP IN MY HEART, THERE'S NO BUSINESS LIKE SHOW BUSINESS and PICNIC.

You're right! Oops! I meant to say DIRTY DANCING! I just typed FLASHDANCE. My mistake.

The year was 1947 so I would say it would be Mother Wore Tights or Song of the South. I am sure the scores I like such as A Double Life or The Bishop's Wife were never released back then.

It may have been CAPTAIN FROM CASTILE released in 1950 on a 10-inch Mercury record. Very few soundtracks were released before then.

It must have been HIGH NOON by either Tex Ritter or Frankie Laine in 1952. I was too young to remember :)
weavercp, August 7, 2005; 8:44 PM

That's no excuse! I remember it was HIGH NOON and I wouldn't be born 'til Bassey took on Bond!

Star Wars (when it was just that, not episode iv or a new hope)

filmfactsman does! (the man of all kinds of useless movie and music trivia).
#1 single: MY SHARONA by The Knack
#1 album: GET THE KNACK by The Knack
Best-selling soundtrack that year: STAR TREK (How about that? A Goldsmith score!)
I was born on Sept. 9th.
