Question

Exorcist (1973) LP=cd ?

No track lists for the LP on this website. Does anyone know if the Japan CD release is identical to the LP? The other CD release has other tracks substituted in, keeping the total number of tracks the same (just to be misleading).

Yes I remember seeing a track list for an LP of Exorcist with exactly the same 10 tracks in the same running order.
The other CD basically seems to be missing the Mike Oldfield stuff, I believe that might be because of some licensing problems.

I had the LP. The Japanese release is identical.

The WB CD release (came with the LD) is missing a track or two. You can create a complete score CD by mixing them both. :)

Thanks, guys! A homemade combo of the two cds is a good idea, if I can get them...

I have both the original LP of The Exorcist and the Ltd. Edition version of the CD with Schifrin's cues on them. Both are mint including the LP cover, if you would like to buy them please let me know.

The unreleased material by Schifrin is not complete on the limited WB release (according to a recent interview by him). One day we will hear more if Friedkin won't oppose to it, I guess.

If my memory serves me correctly, Schifrin only wrote and recorded very little music for The Exorcist before Friedkin decided not to pursue with his music. It is this music that is on the Ltd. Edition WB CD.

I quote from that Schifrin interview in Score Magacine (located in Spain):

Question: Now, this is the moment to speak about your work in "The Exorcist". What did it happen, really? Why did they reject your score?

Schifrin: The truth is that it was one of the most unpleasant experiences of my life, but I have recently read that in order to triumph in your life, you may previously have some fails. What happened is that the director, William Friedkin, hired me to write the music for the trailer, six minutes were recorded for the Warner’s edition of the trailer. The people who saw the trailer reacted against the film, because the scenes were heavy and frightening, so most of them went to the toilet to vomit. The trailer was terrific, but the mix of those frightening scenes and my music, which was also a very difficult and heavy score, scared the audiences away. So, the Warner Brothers executives said Friedkin to tell me that I must write less dramatic and softer score. I could easily and perfectly do what they wanted because it was way too simple in relevance to what I have previously written, but Friedkin didn´t tell me what they said. I´m sure he did it deliberately. In the past we had an incident, cause by other reasons, and I think he wanted vengeance. This is my theory. This is the first time I speak of this matter, my attorney recommended me not to talk about it, but I think this is a good time to reveal the truth.

Q: Thank you very much Mr.Schifrin, because a lot of fans can now learn the truth about the sad episode...

Schifrin: Finally, I wrote the music for the film in the same vein as that of the trailer. In fact, when I wrote the trailer I was in the studio with Friendkin and he congratulated me for it. So, I thought i was in the right way... but the truth was very different.

Q: This was a shame, because your score was very original and pioneer…

Schifrin: Yes, I was very excited with that project as well but life doesn’t start or end with "The Exorcist".

Q: Will you release it in a complete edition with the label "Aleph Records"?

Schifrin: It isn’t possible as I don’t have the rights of the music.

Interesting, and typical of Friedken - I've seen interviews with the actors and they felt he abused them.
