Morricone - feedback please?
I am only just now discovering the works of Ennio Morricone. His filmography is so impressive I don't even know where to begin! Can anyone out there recommend some of his best work for me? I really like the full blown orchestral stuff with great themes and a hint of romanticism - westerns don't interest me. Your feedback is much appreciated.

Of course there's "The Mission", if you're searching for full blown orchestral stuff with great themes and a hint of romantiscism. This soundtrack was a popular hit even amongst people who don't care about film music. I prefer "low profile" Morricone (I love his 70's cocktail lounge style, with weird vocals) or "experimental" Morricone (for italian thriller/horror movies), but "The Mission" is still one of the greatest soundtracks of all times. But of course you already have it...

Yes, his musicography is very formidable. He must have the world's record for most music written/released. He is also the most collected composer in the world.
Some other scores I would recommend:
Red Sonja
Il Profeta (The Meadow)
Metti, una Cera a Sena
La Cosa Buffa
L'Avventuriero (The Rover)
The Sicilian Clan
La Califfa
Metello
Nostromo
Am I the only one who didn't care much for Malena (too much re-hashed music from Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion)?

I prefer the Spaghetti westerns but these are good:
Mission to Mars
L'Immoralita
Bugsy
Lolita
The Legend of 1900

Marco Polo!!! Be sure to get the 2CD set (much more (very good) music than on the
original LP). The sound quality could be better but the music is gorgeous and makes up
for that.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly -- "The Ecstasy of Gold" is awesome!
Once Upon a Time in America.
I think Yo-Yo Ma Plays Ennio Morricone is outstanding.
Some of his stuff this year -- Fateless and Karol -- are fantastic.
As said, The Mission and Cinema Paradiso are very good. . .

Don't forget the ethereal orchestral-only spaghetti western GREAT SILENCE (no, it's not a blank cd). Unfortunately very hard to find.

Start with the beautiful compilations like: Mondo Morricone, More Mondo Morricone, and Molto Morricone for the cues of his best works. These are my favorites:Veruschka, Bird With The Crystal Plumage, Lizard In A Woman's Skin, La Donna Invisibal, Malamondo, Black Belly of the Tarantula, Mette Una Cera a Cena, Diabolik, all of which have a cue or two on the above mentioned compilations.
