Question

ARE ANY OF YOU VINYL JUNKIES?

I know how hard it is to find original soundtracks on vinyl. But I also know how satisfying it is to actually dig one up. CD's are okay if they're mastered correctly, which is rarely the case, but it feels like cheating. (Plus they're so damn hard to read). My question only goes to all those "collectors" that actually collect records, so show em off. The only interesting collections I've seen so far are only on CD- did I say that when they skip it's over! All of the soundtracks on my wish list is for vinyl-hek I'm a DJ
-and by the way- I collect soundtracks on the following criteria: Chasing, Pimpin, Fucking, Drugging, Killing, and Devouring! Feel free to have a look. Sincerely, Neel. aka DJ Neel N. Kizmiaz. SF.

Nope....I have very few left

I much prefer a compact disc issue for clarity and durability. When I get a CD of a vinyl album I have, I dump the vinyl.

When I got the Varese Sarabande release of EARTHQUAKE (for which I had had both the LP versions...one with the sound efefcts and one without.....on vinyl as well as the MCA cassettes), it was like hearing that score for the first time.

Beats the hell out of ANY of the previous LP or tape issues from MCA.

Vinyl Matter

Soundtrackscollecting is divided in three categories

1/The"musicologist";his only interest is the music, just the music

2/The"hybrid";interested in music AND in the aesthetic of the support

3/The"aesthetist"(maybe a new word invented on purpose-LOL-)
Interested in the artefact as a work of art only
Categories 1 and 3 are incompatible of course.And the vast majority of the members of this distinguished community seem to belong to number1.

The argumentation regarding the fragilty and the mastering particularities developed by Neelnkizmiaz are valid..I have some friends who are classical music freaks;...they sold their vinyl collection 15 years ago or so.Now they sell their cd's to buy vinyl again!!!...Better and smoother sound;That's what they say after years of comparison of the medias.

Of course if you want to read vinyl support in the optimal conditions, you need a sophisticated and rather expensive hi fi system;An excellent turntable is VERY pricey..and I skip the amplifier and loudspeakers...

I have myself a little CDtheque(around 300) and I buy new ones from time to time-But,shame on me, I never(or so little)listen to them. Being a compulsive buyer, I cant help it-LOL-

CD's are ugly undersized pieces of plastic...I prefer by far the vinyl records.Aesthetically and sonically, but this is a personal opinion of course.

And what about MP3?Just virtual music...Not for me really;besides the sound quality is not even the CD one...

Now , the "oriented" collectors are a special category;
They collect soundtracks for specific reasons-actor(the John Wayne ost's only for instance)-movie genre(Sexploitation and so on...);this is another way of collecting , and they are all of them avid vinyl buyers...as our friend Neelnkizmiaz.

Thank you all for answering , I knew I'd get a valid response. But to the gentleman that prefers the "Earthquake" soundtrack on CD, he's missing out on the Quadrophonic 8-track experience of the same soundtrack with extra length time on the 8 track!
Earthquake was the first film to use the implication of infrasound that the film industry called "Sensurround"by Universal Pictures, which usually ment big stars slumming amongst the ruins of script bastardised by Jackie Collins. This sound process was developed by the Cerwin-Vega speaker company for only selected theaters to cap in on the success of the then major "Disaster Movies". The Actual engineers for the effect analyzed tapes from the 1971 Sylmar quake to determine the frequency distribution of the infrasound. Since building resonate at 6hz, it was believed to be safe, unfortunately for the Grauman's Chinese theatre opening, nets had to be placed to catch the ornate moldings that crumbled off the walls and ceiling.
Anyway, I haven't heard the CD version of this particular sound, but could expect to prefer the CD version, now give me your vinyl!

Vinyl Matters. Yes, and Mr. Vinyl Matter neglects to inform you as to why sound differs so much on CD. It's politics, unfortunately. David Geffen is a SUPREME ****head that spends nothing on mastering of lost mono master tapes, because of the word mono, which in artist terms, meant artistic integrity. Stereo or alleged "Stereo" versions of your favorite rock records were released with major fanfare as the better sound, unfortunately this ment that the bass was in the right speaker and drums were in the left. But what if you were in the middle? They never cared! The culprits of this atrocity: Tower's "Duophonic" process, only buy the mono versions of any Tower or Sidewalk record or you'll be doomed!

neelnkizmiaz, October 2, 2005; 6:14 PM

Absolutely;
the TOWER records-subsidiary of CAPITOL by the way-in DUOPHONIC are very poor...Yes buy the mono version or best of all , buy the mono AND duophonic!!!(for comparison)
But TOWER people are not the only ones to blame;CAPITOL,their master label did the same(ref BEACH BOYS);and DECCA put out those horrible "rechanneled for stereo" editions(ref ROLLING STONES) and other labels I forgot...
Nevertheless I must point out to their credit , being an adolescent "collector beginner" at the time , I remember it was nearly IMPOSSIBLE to sell a mono copy in 1966 or 1967;labels like AUDIO FIDELITY,COMMAND,DECCA PHASE 4 and so on had launched the "stereo or nothing" craze....once and for all.

You are refering to Mr Geffen-yes-but the more cynical mogul in the music business is Mr Curb.
I know Davie Allan , and he told me about Mr Curb's turpitudes...not only with him but with a lot of young musicians of that era.

It explains why the OST's on TOWER and SIDEWALK are virtually never reissued or so little...This TOWER SIDEWALK business destroyed his political ambitions;Country music is by far more politically correct(one of the interests of Mr Curb today)

And yes I'm also interested in your"Earthquake" copy-just in case you would own a duplicate-LOL-
