It's really hard to pick exactly just 25 from the list but except for the eternal disagreement with Star Wars as #1 I quite like the list (I would switch The Pink Panther for Tiffany's). Thank god there's no stuff such as Titanic!

I much agree with the number 1: Star Wars (New Hope) by John Williams. Much deserved honor for an outstanding soundtrack that never tires to listen to.

Picking the generally acceptable #1 is indeed very difficult, I realize many people like to see Star Wars there. I cannot offer one personal candidate, but just few ideas which I think all would fit the #1 better than SW (for me):
- Gone With The Wind
- The Magnificent 7
- Ben-Hur
- The Robe
- Vertigo
- The Great Escape (?)
...
Not that I wouldn't like Lawrence but it's also maybe too high on the list (?).

STAR WARS as "The Most Memorable Film Score of All Time"... I don't think so! On what grounds? STAR WARS as "The Most Profitable Film Score of All Time"... probably.

The American Film Institute panel had a list of 250 American made films to create their 100 best scores list. Perhaps the French should do the same so they and their composers won't feel slighted.

Sorry, but I thought this was a forum for collectors, not average imbecils on the street trying to pat each other on the back for liking Star Wars. It's like logging onto Cuisine.com to say that McDonald's is the best eating experience. That's my opinion, and here are a few examples as to why:
The Good , The Bad and The Ugly- Ennio Morricone
The Godfather- Nino Rota
Taxi Driver- Bernard Herrmann
Live For Life- Francis Lai
The Exorcist- Michael Oldfield
More- Pink Floyd
Superfly- Curtis Mayfield
I'd rate Xanadu over Star Wars! Heck, the movie is far more entertaining these days as well, and both seemed pretty ridiculous. Too bad there wasn't any Xanadu dolls and magic wands, and neon glowing roller skates ( with tracer effect features), plus of course 4 other film versions that explained the daughters of Zues and Illuminati roller rinks!
Okay, I just looked at the list and was shocked at the omissions. The Good...Ugly was not nominated nor was Live for Life, Superfly, and More. So I'll just give you a few on the list:
Lost Weekend- Miklos Rozsa
Bullitt- Lalo Schifrin
Andromeda Strain- Gille Melle
The Omen- Jerry Goldsmith
In Cold Blood- Quincy Jones
Thomas Crown Affair- Michel Legrand
If Star Wars is the best out of the soundtracks then "Pop Goes the Weasel" is the Best All Time Song!

Hello,
As a film score collector I know it's all about personal taste, I myself only own 11 out of the top 25 selected and Star Wars is not one of them. I'm not saying it's a good or bad score, to me it's like the most popular song on the radio, why own it when you've heard it 1000 times. My top 25 would be much different and I'm sure most collectors would not agree with my list either, and that's okay. I think when you get a greatest this and that list of any kind, those who are in charge are going to pick mostly the comercial and the well known thats a given. when your a collector of film scores I think you look for different and new sounding scores and shy away from the most comercial formula scores or at least I do to some extent, anyway it would be very hard for me to make a top 25 list, there are so many scores I enjoy for different reasons. Well thats my take on it for what it's worth.
Best Regards,
David Phoenix, AZ.

What happened to Dr. Zhivago? What happened to Love Story? What about The Godfather? If Star Wars was not a hell of a blockbuster of a movie do you honestly think it would be rated as #1? Personally for me "Lara's Theme" from Dr. Zhivago evokes completely different emotions than the almost militaristic main theme of Star Wars. Don't get me wrong, Star Wars is a "fun" score. I do appreciate it for what it is, but to rate it as "The Best"? Perhaps the film music of Star Wars did revolutionize and set new standards in film scoring. Maybe on those grounds it deserves the first place. I honestly cannot really comment on those terms since I am not a musician. One thing I can honestly comment on though are my ears, my heart, and my soul. Sorry!... I cannot grant Star Wars the position it received. I guess I'm too much of a romanticist.
