I always enjoy
FIRST KNIGHT (Jerry Goldsmith)
CONAN - THE BARBARIAN (Basil Poledouris)
GLORY (James Horner - the opening bars from the End Credits is fanatstic)
EDWARD SCISSORHANDS (Danny Elfman)
PAVILLION OF WOMEN (Conrad Pope - really nice pick!)

Sorry to all who have made excellent suggestions, but ...

top of the list for choral work on a soundtrack has to be:

The Voices of the Accademia Monteverdiana

used so superbly by John Barry on The Last Valley. The choir also featured on his earlier score the The Lion In Winter (also superb) but it is the later film which has yet to be surpassed by any of his colleagues, etc.

... in my humble opinion!

Nobody has mentioned Ennio Morricone! What a shame.......has anybody used the human voice, whether solo or chorus better and more imaginatively than him....?
MOSES
QUIEMADA!
I PROMESSI SPOSI
LA VENEXIANA
CHI L'HA VISTA MORIRE
RED SONJA
GRAZIE ZIA
CASUALTIES OF WAR etc etc

the list could go on and on............

David,

As a fan of Morricone I could easily include many myself and I thank you for suggesting several. It's just that no matter how good the best one is, it still doesn't match "The Last Valley" - the choir's singing is utterly beautiful!

Mitch

I love THE LAST VALLEY as well however I actually prefer the choral singing on THE LION IN WINTER.

I always find it difficult to give a best or favourite, however these 2 Barry scores would be right up with the Morricone for favourite choral scores along with Rozsa's QUO VADIS and Poledouris CONAN THE BARBARIAN. I also think Goldsmiths OMEN trilogy is superb however I don't listen to them as much as the others!

cheers Dave

Oh how I love a good use of CHOIRS. My favouirites are definitely good old CONAN THE BARBARIAN by BASIL POLEDOURIS, also by POLEDOURIS, HUNT FOR THE RED OCTOBER, the epic scores of MIKLÓS RÓZSA, ALFRED NEWMAN's The ROBE, MORRICONE's THE MISSION, The OMEN trilogy and FIRST KNIGHT by JERRY GOLSMITH, ELFMAN's use of Choirs is simply brilliant and so is CHRISTOPHER YOUNG's! ELLIOT GOLDENTHAL's TITUS, KENJI KAWAI's GHOST IN THE SHELL, GEORGE DeLERUE's BLACK ROBE, JOEL GOLDSMITH's KULL THE CONQUEROR, The LORD OF THE RIGNS Trilogy by HOWARD SHORE, BRUNO COULAIS' LES CHORISTES, VANGELIS's in 1492, JOHN WILLIAMS' works, particularly in STAR WARS 'Duel Of The Fates' and for sure many others I like but rightnow I can't recall.

Without doubt "The Last Valley" - my all time favourite, and "The Lion In Winter". I heard thousand of filmscores, but I still think that these two gems are the best choral scores, and I don't want to dimnish quality of such masterpieces like Omen and Conan The Barbarian, but they aren't leaned on choral parts in such degree like TLV and TLIW. John Barry like nobody before him has shown such a wide spectrum of use of choirs and he didn't yield to that awful "carmina burana syndrome" which is unbearably present in almost all modern choral filmscores.

If the subject is a good use of chorus, I should also honour:
-The Final Conflict
-True Confessions
-L'Enfants Des Loups
-Conan The Barbarian
-Alexander Nevsky

Many good Soundtracks were mentioned already, especially the Omen trilogy- Part 2 being exceptionally Satanic.
Let's not forget:
Exorcist 2: The Heretic - Ennio Morricone . Covered by Snakefinger!
The Shining- "De Natura Sonoris No. 2 " by Gyorgi Lygeti and "The Awakening of Jacob" by Kyrstof Penderecki are incredible and horrific.
Sapho- Georges Garvarentz. All female lesbian porno funk chorus!
Un Beau Monstre- "Hashish Party"- by Georges Garvarentz. Speaks for itself!
Matalo!- Mario Migliardi. Killer rock funk over female chorus!
Colpo Rovente- Piero Piccioni. Get the Easty Tempo re-issue for the bonus chorale freakbeat party sounds.
