COMMENTS ON THE NEW VARESE RELEASES
Hi guys! Any comments on the new Varese releases? What do you think of these four new film soundtrack additions... any good? Are they worth purhasing? I just listened to the sampling tracks with the PC headphones hear at work (on my break of course...yeah right). I was looking forward to something more, can't think of a word... bombastic perhaps. They sound okay I guess. Even though I'm not exactly jumping up & down with joy waiting for the moment to go home and place my order. I'll let it simmer for a while. At the moment I am more in a... "Predator" mood! As a note, I would not mind Varese releasing "Swamp Thing" on cd. Even though it is(was) only available on LP, they should re-release it on cd. The movie is being constantly played on MGM. It's such a bomb of a movie but it's laughable to watch for what it's worth. The film music from what I remember sounds... good. What do you think? Got to go! Take care!! :- )

As you say - the releases are okay but nothing bombastic, and my empty wallet tells me that I will pass for now.
Most interesting for me is Bernstein's Scalphunters which I hope will stay available for some time.
I'd say it's good that composers like Young & Conti are receiving more attention, rather than if there would be a milionth disc by some "mainstream" composer.

I just ordered TOP SECRET. I absolutely LOVE that movie and it sounds like a fun, bombastic orchestral score (the likes of which I haven't purchased in quite some time). I'm bummed, however, that the songs from the film were not included as well. "Skeet surfin'..." Oh, that would've been magic.
Overall, though, I was (once again) pretty disappointed in Varese's choices this time. I'd really like to see some funky 70's grooves and 80's 'synth' horror stuff. Agreeing with sushislash's suggestion, I think that SWAMP THING would definitely be cool, along with CHILDREN OF THE CORN, TROLL, CAT'S EYE, and others of their ilk. I'd ESPECIALLY like to see more 80's blockbuster comedy scores (I don't care which label releases them, just DO IT NOW!), like BACK TO THE FUTURE, GHOSTBUSTERS, GREMLINS, and GOONIES. (^_^)
P.S. I passed on THE KINDRED last time because to my ears that score is just plain BORING, but picked up SPACEHUNTER instead, which turned out to be a bit different than I'd expected but still exciting nevertheless.

Okay, so the Varese Club releases are produced in 1,000, 1,500, and 2,000 or so runs. But,
how many does Varese (or Intrada, for that matter) run on its "regular" releases, like the new
"Zathura" CD?

Hello,
I think the clear choice is "The Scalphunters", But I am a big Elmer Bernstein fan, So I know others may not be as thrilled with my choice. I also like the other composers on the other three releases, I'm just not familiar with these movies, So I don't know if I will buy them. When reading the info on these releases I noticed that the website is saying that the Maurice Jarre score "Top Secret"(Already sold out) has been requested often by customers, If thats the case I find it odd that that is the release with the least copies avaliable (1000). I wish someday that they would release "Villa Rides" By Jarre, Well thats my 2 cents on the subject.
Best Regards,

I was a bit let down I was up at 2am that is 12 Midnite PST for CA in the US and the titles
loaded and I put Top Secret in my cart then emptied it I was very let down. I decided agaisnt
Top Secret cause I don't really collect Jarre scores infact the only one of his I own is Doctor
Zhivago and I would love to see a definitive CD release for Lawrence of Arabia. I was hoping for
more interesting titles like for instance some of Bernstein's works like his Heavy Metal score or
his score for The Black Cauldron. Maybe even another Jerry Goldsmith cd but I ended up
ordering nothing at all.
