CDDB... Who's in charge here?

I'm frustrated with how the data comes back on a lot of CDs when they load. Genres are
wrong,
titles are mispelled, and there is rarely any consistency between double-disc sets. Often, the
second disk's data is in a different arrangement than the first.

Plus, the cover art for the discs should load as well when it's brought into iTunes.

Who's responsible for the contents of the CDDB database? I wish there was a way to
overwrite bogus data on the thing.

Just venting.

Hi glenngarv,

I'm awfully thick ... I haven't a clue as to what you're on about ... to what do you refer: "CDDB ..."

It surely can't be this database - we've been through this before, only recently. If it is a gripe ("Just venting") about SoundtrackCollector then there is an easy answer - go to the soundtrack database which is better and more accurate.

As I said, I'm thick so may have have completely misunderstood what your complaint is about.

It's not about SoundtrackCollector at all. This database and blog is an exceptional Web
site, far superior to others I've seen and tried to use.

I'm belly-aching about the Gracenote CDDB database that gets referenced by iTunes
whenever you load a CD into your computer.

Hi glenngarv,

Very many thanks for clarifying ...

As for "Gracenote CDDB database", I haven't ventured into "iTunes" so I have no idea but I am so pleased that your "vent" is not against this superb site!

Best of luck with your collecting/downloading.

the same damn problem I've got with WinAMP when it's calling some information about my CD in my drive.
As you said: wrong genres, wrong track listing, and the second CD is missing!!
I didn't find any way to change it and now I really don't care about. :)
Just using this web-sites and running my own database at home.

soon is christmas and I hope I will get some new scores :D

cheers

Have you tried Freedb? It's not a lot better, but a little... :)

I know what you're talking about. CDDB (especially for soundtracks) can be really off. I've wondered how do you report incorrect information and where is the artwork. :) I agree Itunes has it better but I've seen some pretty bad errors there as well.

Hi Glenngarv, try checing the FAQ on www.gracenote.com, they run the CDDB. From what i can gather there database is compiled from the licenses of the CD creators, some track listings and cover art are links to the licencees own databases.

I'm assuming the majority of the database is like this one, submitted by peeps who own the CDs. Hence the inconsistency and bad spelling.

I've just spent the last 5 days importing my entire CD collection onto my Mac for transfer to my iPod so this problem is especially prevalent in my memory.

I've often manually corrected the info myself and clicked "submit to CDDB" in the options, but I don't know how much effect that would have...

The dude:

Remember that, after spend tons of time in iTunes modifying the typos and inconsistencies in
the tracks, never make the mistake of selecting tracks and selecting "Get CD Track Names"
under the Advanced menu. Those tracks will reset to the way they originally came in.
