Question about SPACE:1999 by Barry Grey (Silva Screen CD)

If any of you out there have heard this CD, can you tell me if there is any "funky" 70's style music on the disc other than the main titles, end titles, and alternate main/end titles? Do any of the "incidental" background cues from the individual episodes contain "funky" music as well, or are they all traditional orchestral fare?

Thanks in advance for your help...

Aren't you referring to the second series music, by Derek Wadsworth. Now THAT's funky! ;o)

The funky music was released on an lp # ABL1-1422 on RCA records and contained the funky "Death's Other Dominion" and "Black Sun". On the jacket Barry Gray is the composer for these 2 cues, but before you get too excited, these 2 tracks were originally library cues from the Regency Line label on RL 1010 entitled 'Heavy Rock' and the cues were originally called "Funko" and "Earthy" and both were written by Irving Martin & Brian Dee and coyrighted 1975, a year before the Space:1999 cues were released. Now it gets weirder because "Funko" was released on the 'House of Loungecore' CD as by the Saint Orchestra with original writer credits Irving Martin & Brian Dee. The Bruton label is also said to have liscenced music to the program. If you are lucky enough to find the regency line LP you will be in for some great songs: "Portugalia", "Cooking Along","Elektra Streak","Dirty Rat", "C is For Charlie" & "The Mysteries of Mars".

Funko & Earthy were both written by Irving Martin & Brian Dee and I was not aware of the changed writer credits on the Space 1999 CD although I was advised of the usage and title change at the time. I'll get in touch with BMG Music Publishing and advise accordingly. Barry, if you read this could you contact me via PRS/MCPS.

Funko is also the b side to the uk 7" single Return of the saint tv theme released on pye records label in 1978...It is also on a recent released double lp and cd of the music to the uk tv series The Sweeney, this album also contains funky tracks from various library albums which were used in the series.

It all seems to get stranger and stranger. Funko & Earthy both Martin/Dee compositions have had many incarnations - none more annoying than the Space1999 outing where it now seems that Barry GRay collected all the royalties on the whole album including the Martin/Dee tracks. I am led to believe it sold seveal hundred thousand copies. Niether Sony/ATV or BMG want to know because their records don't go back that far and it is now up to me to prove the sales and perhaps go to court and sequester Barry Grays records to prove my point. To make matters more confusing when the album sales started to pile up, Barry composed new tracks registered them under the same title and replaced them in the Funko & Earthy slots on the album. To do this was a very expensive operation in those days if the sales of the album were minimal, as stated by Sony/ATV and BMG. Probably running into excess of £20k. Having now approached RCA (now Universal) for the total world wide sales records on the album. I will make a decision on how best to proceed.

First of all, any fan of the music to Gerry Anderson will tell you that it's Barry GRAY, not Grey. Barry died in 1984, so isn't going to be able to answer queries.

It's well known in fan circles that the Space 1999 album which was issued by RCA back in the 1970's was put together by ATV Music in London (I seem to recall the names Bernard Heath and Kay Chandler as 'coordinators). It was produced for sale only in the USA, I believe.

I'm a little hazy on the details, but weren't 'Funko' and 'Earthy' produced for either the Regency/Bruton libraries? At the time the album was done, these libraries were the property of ATV Music, I understand.

The most important thing to note in all this is that Barry Gray had NO KNOWLEDGE WHATSOEVER of this album and had no input into it at all. Over the years, he made this very clear to fans and was none too happy about the way the album was produced. He certainly did not approve of disco tracks which were totally at odds with the style of the rest of the music being grafted on to the album.

That's probably not much help, but there we are.

Incidentally, I thought the theme to RETURN OF THE SAINT was a corker, Irving!

I wonder if you could help me? I have a vinyl pressing of the Space 1999 Album but not a CD. Silva Screen don't seem to be around anymore. If I could have a copy on loan for a week or so I promise to return it unharmed. Obviously, I'll re-emburse any costs involved. My UK office number is 01256 818940. Please give me a call and we can meet up for a drink in town or I'll give you my address. ILM

Irving

Silva Screen ARE still about and a simple web search will find them.

There is NO connection between the vinyl album from around 1975 and either the Fanderson or Silva Screen CDs, which are licenced and authorised. Furthermore, NEITHER of these contain ANY of your music.

Your argument is mainly with companies that are pretty much gone and with people who have gone the same way - ATV Music and/or RCA.

As I have said: Barry Gray had NO knowledge of, or input into, the vinyl album which contained your two tracks.

Aaron Harry, when at Bruton Music, compiled the album with Barry Grays' input. You're probably right about the time factor and the sale and re-sale of various companies. However, it does not change the facts and that royalyies were paid and not distributed as they should have been. It's really a mal-administration matter by the publishers, as they should have spotted the lable error. Incidentally, I uncovered 2 CDs based on the RCA original pressing lable copy. However, on a costs versus recovery basis I don't think it's worth moving forward whilst there are so many new projects on my plate. ILM
