What brought you to soundtrack-collecting !
Perhaps it´s a to intimate question (so feel free to ignore it) but i would like to know the different ways, how members of this forum came to collect soundtracks.
For myself it was a combination of two things: love for ´classical symphonic music´ and for films. So the first film that made me real aware of ´music in films`was Jaws (when i was about thirteen). And the first LP i purchased from my pocket money was the soundtrack to Jaws 2.

I was amazed by the music for Escape from New York by John Carpenter, then one day I noticed this cd was available in the shop, I saved some money for it, bought it, listened to it more than hundred times and I am hooked on filmscores eversince!(my first score cd was the Milan version of this score )
By the way I have almost all releases of Escape from New York that got ever released, including the expanded version.
this one just won't let me go!

My dad had LAWRENCE OF ARABIA, HATARI and DOCTOR ZHIVAGO on LP. At age 5 I used to listen to them all the time. He would say to me doesn't this music sound like a desert (LOA) or doesn't this sound like snow and ice (DZ) and don't those drums sound like the jungle (H)? I did not see the movies until after I knew the music backwards and forwards. That was back when you could look at an LP cover as a piece of artwork and not need a magnifying glass to look at the text and pictures. :)
My first soundtrack purchase was PATTON. I saw the film and loved the trumpet fanfare. At that point I became a soundtrack collector!

For me it began with the famous Jaws theme. I had seen the movie but was unaware of the music (I must have been 14 or 15). Some time later I heard the ominous da-dum music on the radio, and immediately knew (or better said "felt") it was from Jaws. I was fascinated by the fact that the music was in my subconciousness. From then on I was hooked on that theme and how music in films seemed to work in some mysterious and magical way. It helped of course that I liked the sound of a symphony orchestra But the first soundtrack I ever owned was not Jaws but Morricone's "Once Upon a Time in the West', I received it as a gift (on vinyl, it was still the 70's after all) . From there on it grew worse and worse ;-))

I remember having a small music box as a youngster somewhere in the house that I used to wind up all the time to listen to the beautiful 'Lara's Theme' melody from "Doctor Zhivago". Not knowing what was playing, until much later when I first saw the movie, I found this melody so beautiful to listen to. I also remember an LP in the family collection which I have till this day with the film soundtrack by the Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis from the movie "Z". I trully recommend this album to all. It is one of my all time favorites along with the music from the film "Serpico". I cannot really recall an exact time in my life being taken by film music. Coming from a music oriented family, music in general was always part of our every day family life since I can remember. It was there. Even though I used to go to the movies quite a lot as a child with a family member, I was too engrossed in watching the movie and listening to the dialogue being basically a passive listener to the background music. Looking back at all this now I realize that was not the case at all. Unconsciously what captivated me in watching a movie besides the plot was truly the underlying music. The rest is serifiot history...

I had always been attracted to the snappy themes tunes from TV shows (ranging from things like THE FLASHING BLADE, THE ADVENTURES OF ROBINSON CRUSOE, THE PERSUADERS, SPACE:1999 to MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE, BLAKES 7, THE TOMORROW PEOPLE) and I used to love it when music classes at school would have "guess the theme tune" games. So, I think that I've always had a thing for TV/film theme tunes.
But it wasn't until STAR WARS that things really took off. Meco's synth version of the main theme from Williams' score first attracted me and I have to admit that when I received the cassette of the score for Christmas I was expecting to hear a Meco recording! But I was blown away by the music on that tape and was well acquainted with it by the time I got to see the movie. The melding of the visuals with the familiar music just sealed my fate!

I was also enjoying the TV themes at first (still waiting for "Dallas" music to be released on CD), I've made several hours of videotape archive of the main and end titles of various shows.
Then there was the music from the "Gendarme" movies (but not those marches!!) which I had enjoyed since always, and I started searching if it exists somewhere on CD. And as expectable, a little snowflake started an avalanche of soundtrack-freaking, because while waiting for the Gendarmes I got the Goldfinger CD, and my fate was sealed.

Hi all …
For me, starting to collect was a mix of a love of the soundtrack’s and now health issue!
Just like (Philerouch) I was playing ‘Final Fantasy’ on the Playstation, and I could not get over the music.
I was looking for a long time for it, and it was only just before this last Xmas, that I got the cd box set. (Original only of course)
Also found the Piano Collection too to VII. Ref:KO-99030. Really nice! I have now gone on to all kinds and love the dark Horror soundtrack’s the most. It’s been a lot of help to find this site as I find out more about music and who's made it? with the info on soundtrack’s from all the other great members! It’s been of great help to my health and mood swings. The music really helps to calm me so much. It’s all going well, and I hope to go on to collect a lot more. Lots of really nice music out there, to discover.
To all thanks for the great help over the past year with all the advice and info.
It’s what a page like the Soundtrack Collector is all about.
My very first soundtrack was ‘Animal House’ if I remember right?
*Best to all*
Good luck with your future collecting!

Your responses were all very interesting. For my little daughter Carlotta (Age 5) i always have to play ´Chicken run´. So if one day someone will ask her ...guess what she will answer?. Thanks again

Hello,
I would have to say what brought me to collecting film scores would be when I was a child I remember my parents playing classic Miklos Rozsa ("King of Kings", "El Cid", "Ben Hur") on the family sterio.
Best Regards,
David Phoenix, AZ.

I was 8 yrs old and it was 1959. I was taken to see Ben Hur at the movies. Parade of the Charioteers was it for me. Later when King of Kings of released I knew I had to have that too. When I finally got a job in 1968 and could afford a record the first I ever bought was the box set of King of Kings if anybody remembers that. Then Ben Hur. Planet of the Apes and The Robe.

A Fistful of Dollars in an Italian cinema in 1964, thought the music was amazing & went mad trying to find a copy.
Then it just grew from there.
