Michel Legrand
Hi all.
Having listened to The Man Who Loved Cat Dancing (Williams/Legrand), Im interested to hear some more Legrand material. out of nearly 800 soundtracks this is the only thing i have by him and must say, even though the music was unused im totally transfixed by it!! Williams music is very enjoyable, but theres something about the Legrand portion that really impresses most! What other Legrand scores do you recommend and which are regarded as his finest work?
Thanks In Advance
Ant..........

I can't agree with the view about his (rejected) score from "The Man Who Loved Cat Dancing" (though as I haven't seen the movie perhaps I'm being somewhat harsh).
I have liked some of his music over the years - his song "I will wait for you" is excellent (particularly when sung by Vikki Carr) and I would recommend you get hold of "The Appointment". Another rejected score but the music is lovely (and you get to hear John Barry's replacement, too!)
For me, though, Michel Legrand's best score is - without doubt - "Ice Station Zebra". Put on the FSM release, switch the lights off and sit back. You will believe that you are on the submarine going under the ice!

cheers davey, i just picked up madeline for 1.25 !!! its a start !!!! the only cds i own are score cds, im not into singy songy cds or anything really other than score stuff. jarre now and again.

hehe, i meant Jean Michel Jarre !! my entire cd collection ( http://www.anthonyputsonmusic.com/?page=Soundtrack&lb=1 ) consists of score music and JMJ albums. One song would not make it a singy song cd hehe !! i have no interest in song albums of any kind. The minimum amount of score material i would look for is around 25 mins ( pretty much any Marc Shaiman release !!!!) anything below and ill pass.

ICE STATION ZEBRA is awesome!!! Great Legrand! I think it is a FSM CD release worth every cent!

Many diverse soundtracks from the long and fortunately still continuing career of Michel Legrand are truly enjoyable. Some of the best were mentioned already, of course I also enjoy his works of the 'Le Gentleman d'Epsom' and 'Maigret Voit Rouge' kind - unfortunately no much music available on records from this period.
Anyway the recent 4CD box is worth getting as an overview of Legrand's illustrious career.

The set 42zaphod has mentioned - "Le Cinéma de Michel Legrand" - might really be a good choice. I ordered it directly from the publisher (I live in Germany and the shipping went very fast and well from France):
http://www.universalmusic.fr/servlet/FrontCreatorServlet?action=discography&artiste_id=94571
If the above link just does not work out, try
http://www.universalmusic.fr/servlet/FrontProduct2CreatorServlet?action=news&product_id=60249809885
(and click at DISCOGRAPHIE)
If THAT does not work out either, try just http://www.universalmusic.fr and search for "Écoutez le Cinéma"
(Sorry, their website seems a bit unstable, sometimes it needs several attempts there.)
You can find the complete "Écoutez le Cinéma" collection there. In my opinion the one series with the best artwork and booklets at all (maybe second just to Film Score Monthly).Regards,
Urs

Wuthering Heights (1970) is a very good score. It was issued at the time of the film's release on an American International Records soundtrack LP, AIR 1039, which is very rare now and can go for high prices. There's one on GEMM at the moment, but it's over £100. Too much for me. It's only in Very Good condition, too. It'd have to be a Mint Condition copy before I'd even consider laying out that much for it. I'll wait while a cheaper one comes along. However, I do have the 45 rpm single issued from the LP. Theme from Wuthering Heights (I Was Born In Love With You) on AIR 164 in mint condition and I guess that this single must be even rareer than the LP by now

Legrand is a fabulous and a very sophisticated composer, a master of romantic and great melodies. My favorite scores are "Wuthering Heights", "Ice Station Zebra","The Go-Between" (his symphonic Suite is a masterpiece), "Thomas Crown Affair", "The Picasso Suite". A truly artist and a complete composer.I recommend you the compilation "Le Cinema De Michel Legrand"

Of course, LaLaLand Records have just re-issued Legrand's masterpiece, WUTHERING HEIGHTS on CD, limited to 1,200 units. It sounds great -- even better than the LP !
