Hello,

Miklos Rozsa is the best composer of epic scores of the past.(my favorite is "King of Kings")

As far as present composers of epic scores I'm not sure?

Best Regards,
David - Phoenix, AZ.

Past, also Rosza...not very original, but true. Ben Hur is great!! So there is my epic favorite...unless...what do you consider to be epic...is Lord of the Rings (Shore) also epic for instance?

Goldsmith and Williams are my alltime favorite composers, present but also past because they started way back in the 50's and 60's...and I consider that to be past as well.
I'm kind of getting to know Georges Delerues music a little bit better right now, so maybe he will be one of my favorites in the near future...

And from the present present, my favorites are Christopher Young (I really like his style!) and Basil Poledouris. But I also got my eye on Beltrami and Tyler.

Rozsa: King of Kings, Quo Vadis(can someone please rerecord the complete score), Knights of The Round Table, Ivanhoe, Ben Hur and El Cid.
Steiner: Gone With The Wind
Newman: Greatest Story Ever Told, How The West Was Won
Tiomkin: The Alamo
Jarre: Dr. Zhivago and Lawrence of Arabia
Elmer Bernstein: The Ten Commandments, Hawaii
Howard Shore: The Lord of The Rings
John Williams: The Star Wars Series
Kaper: Mutiny on The Bounty

I'm sure I'll think of more.

Miklos Rozsa of course! He was the king of kings among epic filmcomposers. Ben Hur my all time favorite.

It's going to be a bit repetitve, but I agree with everybody else
Miklos Rozsa - Ben Hur, the 2-cd Rhino edition is a must have.
I also love King of Kings (again Rozsa), and on the other end of
the musical spectrum North's Spartacus and Cleopatra (the films
certainly qualify for epics, but does that also apply to the more
small-scale music? (small scale compared to Rozsa ... ;-))).
The Ten Commandments by Bernstein is a major favorite as well.

Two of my favorite epic film scores are SPARTACUS and CLEOPATRA, so in my eyes, Alex North is certainly a very talented and versatile epic film composer. Another great epic film score is THE BIBLE (1966) which brought an Academy Award nomination to its composer Toshirô Mayuzumi.

See I knew I was missing someone from my list
Alex North: Cleopatra and Spartacus
Jerry Goldsmith: Wind and the Lion and Masada(admittedly made for the small screen)
Since i've added small screen epics....Conti: North and South, Jarre:Shogun.

I am gratified that I am not alone, it would have to be Miklos Rosza, especially Ben Hur, King of Kings, Quo Vadis, El Cid and Sodomm and Gomorrah
