The next Star Trek composer

Michael Giacchino for the next outing. Thoughts?

An obvious guess. But I would actually prefer to finally hear Giacchino scoring a romantic or melancholic movie. He had ample opportunity by now to demonstrate his action music skills.

Paramount Pictures have CONFIRMED J. J. Abrams will helm the next Star Trek picture for release in 2008. Considering Michael Giacchino's consistent association with Abrams it stands to reason he will be on board the project. Not a bad choice on behalf of the newly invigorated, young audience oriented, Paramount/CBS group. Believe me, when you see M:I:III (as I have) you'll be on your knees thanking Paramount that they've seen fit to dispose of series hack, Rick Berman, who, by the way, was installed by Paramount and was in no way a close working partner of Gene Roddenberry.

And by the way... it's disaster not desaster.

I, for one, am greatful that Abrams and Giacchino—along with Damon Lindelof and Bryan
Burk as producers (of "Lost") and Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci as writers (of "Alias")—are
on this project.
Though I think that 2008 will be a little too soon to revist "Star Trek" on the big screen, and
while I don't necessarily think that a Kirk/Spock Starfleet Academy prequel in the way to go, I
have a lot of faith in this production team. They have a huge geek pedigree and are self-
avowed fans of TOS which I think is needed to do successful version of "Trek."
I'm especially looking forward to see what Giacchino will do with the music as he is one of my
current faves. "Star Trek" isn't necessarily action writing, though. TMP was one of
Goldsmith's masterpieces and contained very little in the action vein. Most of his cues were in
the service of the-wonder-of-it-all story that they were trying to tell in that first movie.
Admittedly, the later "Trek" pictures were action-adventures like TOS, but, again, it depends
where Abrams and company are going with this film. Though I have reservations on the
timing and the storyline, I'm still excited about the possiblities that this franchise carries.

I'm always concerned when they have films based on television shows without the original cast (though with Starfleet Academy I know this isn't possible.) Just think of The Avengers, Scooby Doo, Wild, Wild West, etc. These movies were not made in the style of the original series.
