HIGHLANDER - IT'S A KIND OF MAGIC

DOES ANYBODY KNOW who has prevented the original soundtrack
cut of "A KIND OF MAGIC" by Queen from being available on the many soundtrack albums of HIGHLANDER? In my opinion it is superior to the studio version substituted by Queen/EMI but someone has decided it is not going to be available on vinyl or CD. All you can do is record it off the DVD or VHS tape!

Wasn't the music made available on the deluxe DVD as a seperate CD?

That "deluxe" DVD in the metal case, "The IMMORTAL" edition,
doesn't even include "MAGIC" on the separate CD!

Not the whole story but part of it that I know to be true.

I worked on the orginal Highlander for the production company/Distribution company, Thorn EMI or in some terretories Thorn Screen Entertainment.

The sad story is this, the movie was in it's final stages of pre-release & Thorn sold the whole company & all assests, produced, library & in production films to Alan Bond company.

The producers of Highlander were then under extream pressure to get the movie out & to generate re-sales to other markets. The film itself suffered awful cuts in almost all regions except Europe as these markets found the film confusing? A fact that does not appear true as these markets have all had the European cut now on DVD!

having rushed the film to completeion & days before release Alan Bond sold the whole company AGAIN to The Canon Group. Disaster struck as they were so desperate for money in to cover their debts that the movie, along with others such as The Hitcher, were thrown out 1 after the other, to try to generate a 'hit' & a revenue stream to pay for all their 'Ninja movies etc'.

Due to the 2 take overs & the politics at the time, I have heard some crew were not even paid, although that is rumour & I was certainly not unpaid, in fact I was treated very well by the producers & indeed Canon Films, the whole rights to the Queen songs & the film versions & the Kamen score, pretty much went out the window.

Canon never marketed scores particularly well & when they did, due to the poor movies they represented, they often did not do well. So the Kamen score was doomed from the start, although Edel did put part of it out in an official cd.

Queen pretty much upped thier tents & left the project, when they left they had the rights to their songs & kept it as such. The film versions can remain just that, film versions & they can release their versions with no further rights issues.

To be blunt, it will all boil down to money, Panzer & Davis who have produced all the Highlander films, seem to show very little interest in having an official cd of the songs & score & they pretty much control the whole thing now.

A very good friend saw 1 of them a year or 2 back & asked the question about an official cd & he was basically told 'what sthe point'! I think the legal issues will be so exspensive that to deal with Queen & the Kamen esatae & the all the terretorial issues will make any official cd so exspensive to produce no 1 really cares any more.

There is a bootleg version of the score which is ok, but far from complete in many aspects. This is about as good as you will get for the time being at least.

A shame & thats the way so many things go in the world of film.

But then again if Intrada can pull off Amazing Stories & Verese Sarabande Ghostbusters then who knows what may come.

I hope this is some insight for you.

regards

Andrew

Thanks a million for that reply Andrew, that seems to explain ALOT of the mystery surrounding this score.

I have two seperate "boots" of HIGHLANDER, niether of which is complete, and both sound like crap except for the tracks lifted from the Edel "official" CD and from the Silva rerecorded CD. Both these boots are extremely repetitive too, each containing Training Montage after Training Montage. Brilliant piece of music, but I don't need 8 versions of it on a single CD. Both these discs are missing the 17th Century harpsichord piece, as well as other key cues.

Oh well.... from what you said, I guess it's the best we will get.

Have a hunt around some of the Queen fansite's (Queenzone in particular) as there are afew fans I have spoke to that have attained them (or so they claim) of the score and movie versions opposed to the awesome album versions...

Die-Hard Queen fans are the answer (and not the ones who own the albums as such)... and piss tight about sharing their collections too - start some sweet talking...
