Question

How do you listen to your soundtrack collection - part 1

A simple question ... I don't recall seeing it posed before. But why part 1? Part 2 asks for the more technical reply!

Many of us have numerous scores in our collections ... and from other recent posts those collections appear to get ever larger! So, the simple question: how do you listen to your scores?

For me, majority of the time it is as background on the living room hi-fi whilst working at the computer upstairs. Not the best scenario but I have to earn a few quid (bucks) to keep the collection in being. Now the youngsters are home on study leave my listening is seriously curtailed but that's (family) life. When I get the chance I will sit and listen in the living room - perhaps whilst scanning the newspapers but as such quality time is limited I do have to be very selective in my choice of score.

I occasionally play a score over the computer but the lack of sound quality means this is very much a last resort. Otherwise it is in the car - again sound quality is an issue but it's better than nothing.

Nothing herein is extraordinary ... so: does anyone else have a different take on their listening environment?

Hello,

I love to listen to my music in the car and when I'm at the gym on the treadmill or Bike. Like yourself I also play my film scores alot around the house as background music. I will often put some relaxing score on when I have trouble sleeping as well. So I guess there is not alot of times I'm not listening to something, Which is good considering how many cd's most film score collectors have, If your not listening to your cd's what's the point of having so many.

Best Regards,

Hi Mitch!
It is a Very Interesting Question!

It's very difficult to give my answer, I really "live with music" every minute of my day.
I listen to it in the morning while studying or make up my room, in the afternoon after the lunch and while working/chatting at the pc/going out with car or by feet (usually with headphones on)/etc... In the evening, after the dinner, in the headphones, while chatting, browsing the net or just relaxing!

Sometimes I listen to the scores as a background of my day, sometimes I listen to it with high attention (expecially when I keep up the Headphones or when I'm alone at home... with hi-fi's speakers at high volume ahahaha). :)

I really love music, It's difficult for me to "switch off" the Hi-Fi, infact when I've to keep my concentration focused on an important thing (like study) I sadly have to click "off" :(

About kind of listens: I usually listen to the "high symphonic music", with large orchestra and chorus, while making up my room or doing anything doesn't keep my principal attention on the music.
I really enjoy atonal, sperimental etc... music (like Goldsmith, Rosenman etc...), it's my favourite, so I prefer to listen with high attention (for example during relax time) this kind of scores.
Another good background, for me, is the electronic or ibrid (electro-symphonic) music, I really enjoy listen to it while doing anything :)

See You Soon!!! Bye!
Valerio

I usually don't do anything while listening to it.

Hello Mitch,
I end up doing all of the above at some point I also like to listen to Tracks whilst on the play station. (Something like Medal of Honor with let’s say Indian Jones or similar action scores.)
The right combination can be exhilarating and give you such a adrenalin rush.
More than anything there is one thing I like to do which is very important to me. This is on the first play of a new soundtrack and has become somewhat of an ritual. I have my stereo set up perfectly before hand, The wife is out or doing something else in the house! The phone is off the hook. I am in my favorite seat with a glass of something nice. Every thing is set just right, so that it is just me and the soundtrack for an hour or so, and then I blast myself with the new score. I sit there from start to finish and really listen. Heaven!
I guess it sounds a bit corny but how many people can’t relate to that? Not many I’m sure. I suppose that it comes down to having the time to do it right though.

Hello Mitch and fellow-soundtrack-listeners...
For me there are two ways to listen to soundtracks.
One way to listen is to play my MP3 player while I'm doing all kind of things.
I use the shuffle-setting so I never know what's coming next.
The second and preferred way is to take a cd, put it in the player,
turn up the volume, sit down and really listen to and enjoy the music.
