Question

How do you listen to your soundtrack collection - part 2

This question is aimed at those with hi-fi set-ups which allow alternative amplifier settings, in particular, the chance to use surround sound.

Due to lack of space in the family home I combined my hi-fi set-up with the TV - home cinema arrangement so that the home cinema amp acts for both. This allows a choice of sound settings for both and it is the hi-fi amp setting that gives rise to this question.

In the main, I will have the amp set on "Direct" so that the CD sound is as true as possible ... sound comes from the two front speakers plus. where so encoded on the CD, the sub-woofer.

Some CDs are, however, encoded for Surround sound ... CAM are a good example (though for some you would hardly notice it!) and in recent years Silva Screen releases also. Whilst their re-recordings of often classic material may not always be perfect(!) their sound reproduction over a 5.1 speaker set-up is well worth the experience.

But what about other titles? I have found that selective works can have an amazing result:

Morricone's Alzati Spia, for example, (Screen Trax release) becomes a completely new listening experience when played with the amp set on "Standard" utilising all six speakers (albeit the two rear speakers are only mono). The disc has no reference to surround coding so there is nothing to advise me what amp settings I should employ.

Older recordings do, generally, suffer from the 5.1 treatment unless specifically encoded and more often than not my experimentation leads me back to the "Direct" setting.

Any observations / comments?

Happy listening!

Wow, Interesting!

I start listen to the music with the same hi-fi system I'm still using now! :P

When I was a child my father bought me some high level components by different brands: Amplificator by Technics (su-v7, 4-8 Ohm, 80W each channel), Radio by Sony, Tape by Sharp, LP by Pioneer and, when it was released, CD by Kenwood (my PC is connected to the Hi-Fi too, very pretty, expecially when I want to jump from a track of a disc to another track of a different disc... Infact I keep all my original cds encoded on it, makes changes easy when I only want to listen music as "background") :)

I had 4 speakers at that time, now I only use two of them, made by Genesis (8 Ohm, 100W), with very good sound, sharp for minimalistic or atonal compositions, soft and powerful with high orchestra & chorus, electronic etc... compositions.

I really enjoy it's sound;I listened to my favourite music through different new hi-fi and home teather sets (also my father's one), but I didn't like their "voice" as mine one. Maybe it's only the "just voice" for me! :D

Again... See You Soon! Bye Bye and, of corse, HAPPY LISTENING! :P

I too have a similar set up at home Mitch. I have a sophisticated system but within a small room and the room is not ideally shaped for surround sound. Listening to standard soundtracks with 5.1 pro. I and pro.2 can be for me annoying. I am always fiddling with speaker balances, Too much on the center, not enough on rear left and so on. One can go through an entire album doing this. I usually keep it on pro. 2 and all other settings set to accommodate most soundtracks unless I have the time and effort.
The only true 5.1 soundtrack I have is Jeff Waynes War Of The Worlds Re-master and felt quite disappointed with this version but there, I have said that I can be a funny old purest sometimes didn’t I.

Hi Mitch,
I used to listen to soundtracks in Dolby Pro-Logic for quite a while,
wether it was recorded that way or not. I liked the spacious sound.
Some recordings really work well that way in my opinion,
the music sounded less constrained to my Magnat speakers.
Since I bought new Quad speakers I feel less inclined to use the Pro logic setting.
Maybe it's because I like the sound of my new speakers better than the sound of the old ones?
Who knows... I still use the same Denon amplifier (5 yrs old).
The stereo setting sounds much clearer and real now,
Pro-Logic makes the sound a bit artificial and muddier.
There is an exception..., the extended LOTR-Fellowship dvd 5.1 (the only 5.1 soundtrack I own...)
It sounds great in 5.1, much better than in "oldfashioned" stereo ;-))

I have a nice Kenwood THX receiver, currently set up as a 5.0. I don't have or particularly need a sub-woofer. This is because I own a pair of ancient Pioneer HPM 100 speakers. The woofers on those "bookshelf" speakers are more than up to shaking the house when watching stuff like DVD's of the Lord of The Rings.
There are many possible settings on the receiver for music. At times I will cycle through the options to see which sounds best. Other times I set it to stereo and have everything pour through those nearly 30 year old Pioneers.

Frequently I just hit the shuffle button on the 200 disc Sony cd changer and let the music go where it will. Although come to think of it, it is time to rotate some discs out and put others in. When is Sony coming out with a 600 cd changer?...hehehe.
