*summer 2006* VARESE SARABANDE CD CLUB RELEASES

The new summer 2006 Varese CD Club releases have just been announced...

1) "GLORIA" (1986) by Bill Conti
2) "THE WAR OF THE ROSES" (1989) / "THE SANDLOT" (1993) by David Newman
3) "AN UNFINISHED LIFE" (2005, rejected score) Christopher Young
4) "SKY BANDITS" (1983) by Alfi Kabiljo (who?)

Your thoughts???.... Nothing like what I expected.

Lukewarm releases in a very hot -World Cup- summer.

The older Varese CD Club releases were more interesting.

Should I or should I not purchase... that is the question my film music devotees!

grrrrrr!

I think we're a bit harsh. Anything by Christopher Young is worth having and listening too and if the write up is as honest is as it writes about the music then this will be played quite freqeuntly. Piano solos are brilliant in the right hands. Alfi who!? Indeed. However, the write up says that the National Philharmonic performed the music which is no bad thing. Some of the finest musicians in the world comprise the orchestra and its credits include The Symphony of The Lord of the Rings and I had the pleasure to see the concert and Shore conduct and orchestrate it. So they don't just perform for anyone. We all wait for a blockbuster like Predator or Die Hard and then our hopes are dashed when they are not released because it is what we expected. But I am sure these scores will be great if we give them a chance and I bet Alfi Who!? will spring a surprise. I bought all of them except Gloria.

Hello,

Not that exciting overall, But I think "Gloria" by Bill Conti is the pick of the litter. I will also most likley will purchase the David Newman cd because of "The Sandlot". Hope the next releases are more impressive.

Best Regards,
David Phoenix, AZ.

I agree with TheSaint. Let's not be to harsh. Gremlins and the Goonies these are not...but the varese club new titles are still very intersting, in my humble opinion.
I must admit I ordered all titles. I'm very curious about Sky Bandits. I really liked Gloria (the movie that is) and I'm also very cursious about Conti's score. Don't really remember it, but Conti usually delivers the goods.
I'm a big fan of Young, so this rejected score is bullseye for me. And last but not least; War of the Roses and Sandlot sounds also very interesting. I like most of the early scores by Newman (except for Critters), and this one is, I think, a welcome edition to my collection.

In general, most track samples I've listened to are usually of low sound quality and too short (excluding FSM) not justifying the score but of some value nevertheless.
As the name implies... mere 'samples'.

1) "Gloria" ... sounds promising and sensually powerful.

2) ''The War Of The Roses'' / ''The Sandlot''... no comment as of yet... I can't really tell.

I love the track titles though for "The War of The Roses"... how wonderfully creative!

-The Beginning
-The Middle
-The End

Hope the score delivers as well as the movie.

3) "An Unfinished Life"... soothing... depressing title.

4) "Sky Bandits''... Alfi Kabiljo (WHOOOO?)... energetic, militimaristic, bombastic, loud.
A promising early morning score together with a cup of strong espresso.

Anyway, I could'nt hold back!
Just placed order... for completest reasons as well of course.

Poor VISA...
Poor me!... :- ()

Unless one of the 4 releases is absolutely worthy. Bill Conti's GLORIA is one of those scores I've always wanted to see officially released. I listened to it when I watched the movie a lot of years ago. I was really impressed with the music and, since then, I've dreamed of listening to it in my stereo.

No doubt, today's a lucky day for me and, don't hesitate, for everyone purchasing that Conti's gem called GLORIA.

By the way, I remember this score sounding rather similar to Maestro Joaquín Rodrigo's "El Concierto de Aranjuez". Any thoughts on that?

Greetings,

Ángel

Yes, Serifiot, that's unbelievable!
Is everybody going nuts??? There must be a new and highly contagious mental disease, commonly caught at eBay, that must be treated urgently by a psychiatrist...

angeldibujo, June 26, 2006; 5:19 PM

I think will buy GLORIA, no clue which other title I should buy (or if at all). GLORIA sounds way better than the March Club title from Conti which sounded like average 1980 TV series music.

It is a pity that due to Ebay and the collector mania the factor of musical quality almost plays no role anymore among film music fans. With limited quantities of 1000 or 2000, one has to buy regardless if you can really determine if the actual MUSIC on the CD is really worth it or not. It's becoming like collecting stamps or coins or number plates. Sad.

hi handstand,
you said the most correct thing i have ever read since many years in these and other forums!
BRAVO!I agree.....

ciao

I purchased Gloria and The War of the Roses/Snadlot since I seem to collect David Newman scores... to be honest i can't remember Gloria fully but I snatched it up anyhow. Might as well I hate regretting it later once they sell out.

Interesting Choices I'm always up and online ready to see the titles as they are being added to the list. Always wanted Elmer Bernstein's score for Heavy Metal added to the list but here's to hoping!

JackDVD78, June 26, 2006; 7:41 PM

Now playing: "STAR WARS - Attack of the Clones" (3€ new and sealed)

:(

pierremariepelissier, June 26, 2006; 8:50 PM

As angeldibujo ( dibujo ? do you actually draw ? )
I have waited all that time to purchase "Gloria" by Bill Conti .
And for me this is quite good news for a monday !

michel, June 26, 2006; 9:23 PM

Sky Bandits is a kick butt action score. Or did you not get the Varese 25th Anniversary Vol 2? The end credits are on there.

David Newman is always wrorth a listen(as are all the other Newmans from Alfred and Lionel to the rest of the current batch)

Bill Conti: About time more of his stuff was on CD, glad Varese added to my growing Conti collection.

Christopher Young: Man does not live by action scores alone.

Gary (and yes I ordered the Bernstein Box too....my debit card is screaming.

Hello,

It sure did'nt take long for the two (1000 copies) cd's to sell out.

deg63iami, June 27, 2006; 6:53 AM

Hi David.
I just wonder how many of them were sold to gold old fashioned collectors and how many were sold to good old fashioned dollar followers !!

Ant........

anthonynputson, June 27, 2006; 12:30 PM

An Unfinished Life - CD Club
This title is now sold out

Sky Bandits
This title is now sold out

[edit]
Also Silvestri's Romancing the stone is sold out (not that ANYONE is gonna miss that) and Goldsmiths Ballad of Cable Hogue. As posted x times before, Goldsmiths "Magic" is according to Varese now down to it's last 50.

adragon, June 27, 2006; 1:24 PM

Facetiously speaking, perhaps they were sold to good old fashioned collectors who in turn are good old fashioned $DOLLAR$ followers as well???... :- )

In all seriousness, it is unfortunate how one's true passion and weakness for film music appreciation and collecting can be manipulated by the selling tactics of particular record labels to the point where there is no time to take a gasp of air and contemplate concerning the purchase of their limited releases.

Almost every time there is a new announcement of limited releases from Varese it is these 1000 limited releases which sell out within hours first... why is this?

Is the demand always and actually so high by individual collectors for these so called 1000 limited 'rare' and supposedly long saught after unearthed titles which causes this massive stampede and literal hysteria to purchase them before someone else does?
If trully so, BRAVO to Varese and all power to them in releasing more and more rare, unearthed, limited film music soundtracks in the future years to come!

Is it because of total disregard to individual customers' needs who trully appreciate and collect film music in favor of pre-order bulk selling to merchants (cyberspace of course) who in turn start selling at double the price well before these limited releases are even sold out by the original record label?

I believe sadly the latter stands correct!

In my humble opinion, after announcements of new limited soundtrack releases are made a 'one per customer' purchase guideline for these limited releases should be adhered to at least for the first 14 days which would prove a fair and customer friendly gesture from any soundtrack record label.
After the 14 day curfew has expired then all hell and butchering can break loose.
By following this guideline at least a fair chance can be given first and foremost to individual film music enthusiasts and collectors abound and not merchants buying in massive quantities to seriously think and finally purchase whatever limited releases they trully wish to do so in due time.

serifiot, June 27, 2006; 4:20 PM

I think so many buy them only to make a profit and I was going to once but I decided that if I wanted a copy of a certain title and it was sold out wouldn't be too fair to others who really wanted a copy. I only buy the ones I want for myself and leave the rest for everyone else.

JackDVD78, June 27, 2006; 8:05 PM

I thought you were not interested in boring scores coma!... ;- )

P.S. Individually you paid 13 euro for "An Unfinished Life" not 9 euro (literally 17 euro since you ordered two) but in any case it is still decent pricing considering what these soundtracks might cost in a few months.

serifiot, June 27, 2006; 10:26 PM

okay sonny... enjoy your new direction in boring scores then! :- )

serifiot, June 28, 2006; 1:29 AM

bjerva said "Also Silvestri's Romancing the stone is sold out (not that ANYONE is gonna miss that)" Yeah right! That was a fanatstic score, in fact one of Alan Silvestri's best soundtracks. Maybe you are an idiot???
