25th Anniversary "Raiders..." OST

I gotta know if the OST I see at this link:
http://cgi.ebay.com/RAIDERS-OF-THE-LOST-ARK-John-Williams-EXPANDED-IMPORT_W0QQitemZ300010205497QQihZ020QQcategoryZ307QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
...is legit.

It's on the ARK-CD 19812006 label as stated in the page it's for sale on. But guy selling it has a great many bootlegs and I'm not so down with those. However there is supposed to be a re-release of the Indy-trilogy scores being released this year; yet no fansite I've found can reveal any details.

I'm just confused and just want some literal, high-quality, officially made tunes. Nothing generated in a basement illegally, giving some shmo the money Williams deserves.

Beware of this guy: ranspa60ii

also, from what i can make out is that you're getteing a couple of extra minutes from the well of souls track and another version of the Indy theme(which may be even a cover version)So I'd deffinately hang on a bit longer.

I've heard that the anniversary releases are gonna be re-recordings and not the original Williams scores. Is this true?

TheSaint.786, July 27, 2006; 7:21 PM

those CDs are expanded scores --> they contain extra music, and yes they are bootlegs.
just the Last Crusade (2 CDs) is containing some music from The Adventures Of Young Indiana Jones by Curt Sobel. But all three parts are extended versions and in great sound quality.

I admit I own them, I don't care about bootlegs, I want the score and not the expensive out of print CDs people selling on ebay or somewhere. if no label isn't going to release a proper edition so the bootlegs will do their job fine.

Williams has got enough money but not me.

I agree with contact. First of all I owe many original scores, over 100, and counting. Secondly, I owe many bootlges (complete scores), some with excellent sound quality. Whether you like it or not, I do not care. In my opinion, it is the only way to get some great film scores, which have not been officialy released. Though I hope that there will be one day an official complete release of e.g. Independence Day, The Mummy Returns, The Matrix Revolution, etc.
An original CD ist still an original CD to me and I am a great supporter of the film score industry.

Hi everyone!

I have got a question about the Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade 2CD expanded edition. The Adventures Of Young Indiana Jones by Curt Sobel is in great sound quality. And the unreleased music from Crusade? On the second disc there are all unreleased music from the film, I think. Is the quality as same as the original Vol.2 CD or is the quality like OST on the unreleased tracks?

christoph_kappes, July 27, 2006; 11:26 PM

Great supporter of the film score industry..?

Hear, hear..!

info, July 27, 2006; 11:30 PM

@christoph_kappes
the sound quality of the score from "The Adventure Of Young Indiana Jones" (Transylvania, January 1918) by Curt Sobel on CD2 ist an excellent and very clear one.
the unreleased tracks from The Last Crusade on CD2 sound some way dull or something, but it's not disturbing in any way and it's still the clearest and best quality I've ever heard.

Hello contact.

"Williams has got enough money but not me."

So that's reason enough to steal from him?
Who the hell are you? Robin Hood?

info, July 28, 2006; 1:49 AM

well "info", John is fine believe me. he is my TOP 1 favourit. I love him much more than all other great existed composers.
but who are you the rich guy in my neighborhood?
I think it's easy to understand: there is "no way" to get the official CDs for a cheap price. why should I spend a bunch of 50 or more dollars (or even euros) for a CD on ebay when I can get more of the score for just the half of the price? who will get those 50 dollars? John? the label? ... na, just the privat seller.
the official label has done his job after the CD gone OOP (sold out) so who I'm stealing from then? from John? lol funny
why should I get pain in my ass waiting for the next release, even if there will be one. I passed on lot of scores because I'm not a from-the-beginning-collector. so what, I'm not allowed to buy a bootleg one?
I passed the Towering Inferno, damn I hunted that CD for long time, but hey... spend for this CD about 100 dollars on ebay? next door there is a 2-disc bootleg greatly manufactured.
well, I'm not Richie Rich. the lucky guy got this limited one for just 19.90 dollars and next year he sold this one for much more (because of money or doesn't he like John? hmm maybe he has 5 copies).
I passed on many CDs buddy, because I didn't knew they are existing and on some cause of the money I don't have.

you hate boots, just go along with that.
like I said, I buy music not the CD.

and maybe I'm Robin Hood.

I don't want to get too embroilled in this bootleg debate as to whether it is right or wrong? But to let you know, the unreleased music from Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade that I have is absolute quality, so much so that I have incorporated into the original release and now I have a two disc set, over 90 minutes long. You cannot hear the difference between the original release and the unreleased tracks unless you have studio equipment.

TheSaint.786, July 28, 2006; 2:24 PM

Although I see a point in the warning that bootlegs could delay a future official (re-)release (however, I do not think of it as very likely, as I am pretty sure most bootleg buyers would also quickly buy a new legitimate release should it see the light of the day), I don't see any financial difference for the composer between the auctioning of an OUT OF PRINT original CD and the purchase of an illegal copy of it.

Let's take the out of print FSM CD of TOWERING INFERNO for an example. In complicated ways, John Williams got a small share of the 19.95$ each of these FSM CDs sold for (I am sure some better-versed expert can give a good estimate how much it would be and could explain more in detail how the royalties thing works). When someone now auctions his/her original FSM CD for - say - 100$, John Williams DOES NOT EARN A SINGLE CENT FROM IT - just as he does not earn a single cent from the sales of the bootleg. One could even argue the winner of the auction now has less money to buy other legitimate CDs.

So from the point of view of the composer's wallet, it makes no immediate difference if you buy a second-hand original copy for 100$ or a 20$ bootleg. It only makes a difference when you assume that the sale of bootlegs prevents sales of original CDs from original outlets. The biggest immediate difference is to the wallet of EBAY SELLERS. In my humble opinion, I do not feel that scrupulous about cutting Ebay sellers' auction profits (and I have auctioned a few CDs on Ebay myself).

I do not want to deny though that there are more thinkable negative consequences from illegal sales (e.g. one could speculate that bootlegs make composers or agencies more reluctant to issue promo CDs or, as I said, that an official re-release could be judged as a bad sell "now that the bootleg copy has now saturated the market anyway" and thus be shelved). My main point was just that "bootleg or auctioned original" does not make any difference to the composer's bank account (unless you assume John Williams himself auctions remaining copies of TOWERING INFERNO on Ebay - which I tend to consider rather unlikely ;-)).

Urs

P.S.: And please, if you think my reasoning is faulty or I overlooked anything, I am open to learn - given someone explains it in a CIVIL TONE.

Thanks "contact" for answer.
Last question: Can anyone give me the Tracklisting?

christoph_kappes, July 29, 2006; 8:53 PM

and again, I concure with contact.
Hey info, brave words from you! how many scores do you own? how much have you paid for them? I have not seen any info about your collection, info. what does info mean anyway? informer? lol
will you report us? :D
You do not like boots I see. Well, in this case you probably do not know, what you have missed. And I can tell you for sure, you have missed a lot. I buy original CDs, if the music is good. I would pay money for every boot I like if there would be an official release. I am not rich, probably you are. But I support this branch, because I am a score collector, film music is my passion. Secondly, here in Slovakia (if you know where this country lies), it is damn diffcult to get film music in stores. So I have to order from Germany, the USA or any other country. This includes shipment costs as well. But enough of me, it is your turn now. show us what you are made of, info!

I see the morality of my questions was addressed as opposed to my questions themselves....in part anyhow. I see now that you all agree that they CD's I was referring to are in fact bootlegs.

Fine and well and dandy an' all. I don't like those cuz I like to pay genius my money. The originator. Again, not the shmo in the basement. If anything I'd like to know how to rip the tunes from a movie myself, and just leave it at that. I do that, in a fashion anyway, to a degree. I don't have any audio utilities that can tear a whole soundtrack off a dvd, however.

I see the point about royalites being paid once to the writer/composer once for the purchase and not again when the new owner sells his/hers for higher. But what if they aren't selling the original...what if they're raking in doe that's.....nigh effortless, for someone else's work? just ain't right is all, not to me.

Karol ain't the only one who is passionate about OST's. We're all here right? I twitch, in a bad way, a little when those I hang out with don't respond the same to the music I play in my car or at work. I actually hate mid-music-talkers. Bustin'-beat-blabbers? You know, Rad-tune-trashers? Need I go on? ( I won't cuz maybe you know people like that too.) It hurts a little to know that they aren't swayed, they aren't moved as much as I am when the sonic sanity plays. I understand why though. It's all upbringing. Circumstance brought different ideals to them as they've grown, no fault there.

Moving on; I own some bootlegs actually, I just didn't know it was a bootleg I was buying. Internet can be misleading in its representation ..heh. 2 very enjoyable OST's I own are bootlegs. It just bums me out when I think of some dude in a garage or basement....doing what I should've done to begin with, making a film score from a dvd or some other source, only diff' being that I'm doing this for me, not to sell later. (A movie purchase should come with a soundtrack too, IMHO.)

As for quality, I am so overridden with joy hearing my tunes, I can't tell difference between qualities. Not the minor differences anyhow. I can deal with some imperfections. As long as it's original and not a cover, with flawed representation of melody, i.e. like Metalica in studio compared to live performance; it's just different & therefore no good.

Anyone know when the next official release is going to be? That one wasn't answered I dont believe. I still can't find info on that.

So my points were: Now I understand that it's a bootleg, thank you for verifying.
I don't like paying some random dude for a movie score. (maybe i'm upset that he/she can do what I can't....and then taking my money for it. 40 bucks at that. Steep.)
Point 3; we're all here for music. & willing to type out essay-length stories of our own in order to discuss and seek them out.
4: I've only had official stuff and can't tell different between qualities cuz all i've had is 'perfect' stuff. Been no need for dispute.
Point 5: Let's all pray for world where every score/soundtrack is released, every movie has one right? And only once and completed. But no this is about MONEY, & some freakishly stupid exec sits in an office and conducts his business like a mongoloidial money-harvesting orchestra of his own to rake in that money. Money sucks.
Then they rerelease it, altered for whatever reason, rake in more money. I could go on & on. I'm not richie rich either. They should take the old discs we have back in exchange for the new ones.
Final point: I concede to your need for the music. I won't deny anyone that. I've got an...ecclectic range, (no horn-tooting here). I love a great deal. Go get it however you can. Music is puissance. Music is happiness. Increase yours; both of 'em. But when I hold an original in my hand...I know, I feeeel that it will be good, and it will be right, and it will never be......better.

Be Excellent to eachother,
