Best of Mike Post & Pete Carpenter
Hi there. I'm looking for a CD containing all the themes by Mike Post & Pete Carpenter. I saw at least 2 cds "The Television Music of Mike Post & P. Carpenter" (1993) and "NYPD Blue: The Best of Mike Post " (1999). Which one of these two does have *original* tracks, not re-recordings ? Thanks for your help.

This is something I never understood - if my memory is right, then even things like the original recording of "Theme from Magnum P.I." only ever appeared on vinyl releases. I have an old 6 track LP with - presumably - original recordings from a few Mike Post themes.
Everything on CD is rerecordings, as far as I remember. Usually by Daniel (David?) Caine, I think.

The only ones I have are The A-Team on the edel label and inventions from the blue line. I think the latter you can pick up from anywhere.

The A Team Soundtrack from Edel Label is also NOT an original recording, but a re-recording by Daniel Caine aka Derek Wadsworth. BTW. Mike Post himself tends to rearranging his tunes for commercial releases. His Magnum theme for example, released by himself, doesnt sound anything like what can be heard in the series credits. And i know there have been several versions of the theme during the run of the series.
On his CDs "Music from LA Law and otherwise" and "Inventions of the blue line" are some full length Versions of themes like "LA Law, Wiseguy, NYPD Blue, Law and Order, Renegade" which sound quite like the real thing.

I've never cared for the music of Mike Post. Mainly late 70's early 80's American television garbage.

Re: Magnum theme on CD...
I have a CD called Crimestoppers (Rhino), which has crime and mystery TV themes, including
Rockford, Magnum and Tenspeed & Brownshoe by Mike Post. I think they're originals (for
instance the Cannon theme includes the voiceover from the start of the episode 'a Quinn Martin
production. With guest stars...')

A lot of T.V. themes on CD are the original recordings but all the best ones only ever seem to be available in America, Mike Post's themes are quite often the original recording...and more often than not the full length single version instead of the introduction theme, the introduction to the A-Team theme is nearly always the original but it seems impossible to get the original full length single version as the closest I've got is conducted by Daniel Caine. it's a very impressive version, sounds unbelievably like the original but the point is it isn't and I think more ORIGINAL classics like that should be released more often
