Great score; dud film
This thread has probably been covered in the past but:
I was just listening to Alan Silvestri's score for Van Helsing. The score is quite good but the film
was a dog on every other level. I made me wonder what other nominees there are for good (or
great) scores from terrible turkeys.
Jerry Goldsmith will surely get a good look-in.
The Swarm and Final Conflict leap to mind straight away.

I just got a hold of my Saturn 3 Bernstein score and The first track blows me away! I had no
idea it would sound this cool... it is a mix of Ghostbusters/ Heavy Metal and a touch of should I
say Disco? mommentarily that is. I read only tracks were used at the opening and closing of this
film so everything else is unused and the film is very much forgotten.

Hello,
I have posted this question before, But it's a great question and it's good to get some new opinions. One of my favorite John Scott scores is "Shogun Mayeda", But the movie stinks, A B-Movie that I can't stand even though I love the score. Which also reminds me that John Scott's latest release "People That Time Forgot" would apply to this question too.
Best Regards,
David Phoenix, AZ.

Not sure if it is a dud film so much as HARD to find and never released on any video format that
I know of is the film from I think 68 called THE FOX with Sandy Dennis... it has a great score by
Lalo Schifrin and I realize the newest CD release for it is a new recording of it and not the
"original" it a great piece ofr work from Schifrin to listen to .. much different than what one
would expect.

Sorry, whyaduck, but the list is endless!
How about:
the Rambo triology (perhaps we could excuse First Blood - on a good day) - Goldsmith
Bruce Lee's Game of Death - Barry
King Kong (though I quite liked it!) - Barry
Several of the Pink Panther movies - Mancini

To JackDVD
The movie The Fox is a beautifully made and very intimate movie with a very strong cast. And the score by Lalo Schifrin fits the movie very well. One of my favorites..!

One of my favorite scores of all time is John Scott's "King Kong Lives" (a.k.a. King Kong 2). Great music, VERY bad movie.

The list is endless, especially Barry and Goldsmith scored so many awful movies:
Goldsmith - Lionheart, The Swarm, The Final Conflict, Logan's Run, Night Crossing,
Barry - The Black Hole, Moonraker, The Last Valley, Deadfall, Night Games, King Kong,
Christopher Young - The Core, Bless The Child, Urban Legend, Hush,
Isham - Racing Stripes,
Delerue - Joe vs The Volcano,

well, these scores come to my mind:
1. Lost in Space - the beginning ok, the rest bad, but great score by Broughton when taken in consideration that is was written in 2/3 weeks!!!
2. The 13th Warrior (a.k.a. Eaters of the Dead)
3. Hellraiser II and III, the first film I have not seen yet
4. Cutthroat Island
5. Timeline - either by Tyler or rejected by Goldsmith
6. The Haunting
7. The Phantom
8. Tomb Raider 2
9. Troy by Gabriel Yared

The one that comes to mind with me would be "Somewhere In Time" (John Barry). Great novel/Horrible film/Great score.
victoravalentine, September 26, 2006; 3:57 PM

1. Pirates by Sarde. I hate the film, but love the music
2. Story of Ruth by Waxman. Couldn“t bear the film
peter-anselm, September 26, 2006; 4:26 PM

Oh yeah, I know the list is endless, and it's often personal (I quite like Logan's Run and The
Core, for instance). I mean there are going to be some people who think Jaws was an
overrated film. I was aiming for the films that were universally loathed, like Van Helsing or
The Swarm but hey, it's also just fun to vent once in a while.
Cheers.
Further contenders:
Jaws 2 - Williams
View to a Kill - Barry
Raise the Titanic - Barry
Star Trek 5 - Goldsmith

I have another. "The Sandpiper" starring Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor has probably one of the worst scripts around. The score from Johnny Mandel is one of the absolute best.
Forget the story line. If you ever watch that film check out the beautifully filmed scenes of the Pacific ocean around Big Sur, California scored by a master composer.
Drove that coastal route a few times myself. Would be great to do it again someday and pull over to the side of the road and listen to that score while looking at the ocean and the mountains.

Heaven's Gate by David Mansfield. The film supposedly sunk a studio but its a great score.
