First soundtrack

What was your first initiation film soundtrack? I think mine were Close Encounters and Octopussy and a few Tangerine Dream titles.

Hello.

The first soundtrack I listened to was EXODUS (E. Gold), which my father had in his vinyl collection. In fact it was the only film soundtrack he had in his collection. The main theme shocked me so much that I began to pay attention to film music. I was 10.

The first soundtrack LP I purchased after a long time listening to EXODUS and gathering enough money was SUPERMAN (J. Williams). I was 12.

After that, came STAR TREK (J. Goldsmith). Then I couldn't stop enjoying our beloved music...

Best regards,
Angel

Since I can remember, I always had a fancy for the music in the background I used to hear whilst viewing a film, whether at the movie theaters or television at home without exactly knowing that it is actually a whole music genre in itself, and without knowing that I could just go in a record shop and purchase it with my spending allowance which was basically used to buy music/science magazines and mostly rock/disco/80's pop LP's at that time.

I used to and still do (not as much... I guess that's good) play spontaneous music melodies in my mind throughout the occurrence of various daily events and various thoughts, something like "The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty".

I remember this beautiful melody I used to wind up all the time and listen to from a music box that was in the hull of this aimlessly posing decorative wooden gondola just sitting very patiently and gathering dust throughout the house with its bouncing and turning miniature ballerina whilst the melody was slowly unwinding.

Much later I discovered it was Lara's theme from the classic film Doctor Zhivago.

I guess the first soundtrack LP in the family and probably the only one I remember in the house among the numerous music which now is included in my sountrack collection was ''Z'' by Mikis Thedorakis whose score I really learned to appreciate much later in life.

Growing up, even though not all were film music scores per se, who cannot remember at least from my generation the great sounds of Saturday Night Fever, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, The Song Remains The Same, Star Wars, Space 1999 and so much more.

My first conscious film music appreciation though must have been John Barry's scores for the early James Bond films which I still very much enjoy till this day.
One can say that John Barry was my first film music composer as well and still among my all time favorites whose adventurous Bond compositions initiated me to this wonderful and very diverse world of film music.

The rest is... history of an ever evolving divine passion I'm very proud of!

mine was Babylon 5 Vol.1. the main title for the first season is the best I have ever heard. I was 17. Since that day I began collecting film/television music. Babylon 5 is after 11 years still the best film/tv music I have ever listened to. my collection now counts over 100 soundtracks.

Hello,

The first film music I heard was when I was about ten or so and my parents would play Rozsa's "King of Kings", "El Cid" and "Ben Hur" on our family turn table. The first lp I owned myself was a Morricone compilation of his western film scores.

It was the 'Man with the Midas touch' himself, yes, the great Goldfinger.

Breakfast At Tiffany's came just after that.

My first LP was the first issue soundtrack LP in mono from Colpix (UK):
Lawrence of Arabia
and the second was the United Artists LP with some of the original instrumental music from:
Dr. No - From Russia With Love - Goldfinger (UAS 669 122 - German pressing from Deutche Grammophon)
The third was the first issue of the MGM LP from UK with the original music from:
How the West Was Won.
Long time ago - but I still have the LP's.

It was Xmas 1973. My 1st soundtrack was "AIRPORT" by Alfred Newman. Loved it then, still love it now. Guess what I'm gonna throw in the CD player right now?

Go vegetarian!

I was 13.......it was either Jarre's GRAND PRIX or Bacharach's CASINO ROYALE.
ALthough come to think of it......the first LP I bought by saving on my allowance was a United Artists compilation, which had cuts from original soundtracks and covers from artists like Al Caiola, Ferrante and Teicher and the like. I still have that LP: Zulu, Goodbye Charlie, Woman of Straw, Of Human Bondage......

jorgemmh, October 1, 2006; 9:57 PM

Well interesting to see some of you guys bought the same LP soundtrack as myself.....back in the 60's.Whew and what alot has been composed since then.
My first LP soundtrack was also Grand Prix...Jarre... followed by Duel At Diablo by N.Hefti....then it all rained soundtracks from then on...the Bonds , the Matt Helms , the Flints and of course Doctor Zhivago and the Colpix Lawrence of Arabia....but my first movie music experience that blew my mind as a child , was....The Hallelujah Trail.....can stiil feel the reaction and see what theatre I was in when the Overture ,and particularly, the Main Title began...magic....that is what started it all...thank you Elmer.

tanemahuta, October 1, 2006; 11:17 PM

My first soundtrack was Isaac Hayes' Shaft back in 1981.

The next was either Morricone's Once upon a time in the West or Barry's Thunderball.

Christian.Quatremain, October 3, 2006; 7:17 AM

Victory At Sea.

Technically it was from a television documentary rather than a film, but still it ranks as one of the best soundtrack compositions ever, for any medium.

betenoir, October 3, 2006; 9:12 PM

It was Jaws 2 on LP when I was 14. It was in 1990!! Since then I have bought it on CD, along with over 100 others!!!

evesdemons, October 5, 2006; 10:21 PM

My first CD with filmmusic was compilation containing John Williams music from Star Wars movies "John Williams Conducts John Williams: The Star Wars Trilogy" purchased in early 90s, but filmmusic became my great passion few years later when I bought few CDs with John Barry's great music from early Bond movies.

To SERIFIOT,

The beautiful melody that your gondola music box played was "Torna a Sorrento" which was the inspiration for Elvis Presley's hit record "Surrender".
