I was really surprised on teh Birdman of Alc release cause normally they do 4 cd releases at the
Most so Once I put RUNAWAY in my cart and decided that was all I was gonna buy then
Birdman showed up! so that was cool. Birdman should be around some since it is a 3,000 ed
one although Ghostbusters sold out yet on his Intrada release for Saturn 3 that is still around I
guess you never know. Personally I love Saturn 3 more than my Ghostbusters.
JackDVD78, November 6, 2006; 4:27 AM

I am guessing the 1000 piece runs will disappear in about two days. I am not a fan of synthesizers...so Lucas is out and so is Runaway for me. So my lot looks like one of alcatraz, careful, and Seven cities.
I was hoping for something really flashy this time. darn it.
mikecee, November 6, 2006; 4:42 AM

I know what you mean Mikecee ... really wanted something special in the Goldsmith arena,
since someone posted a few days back or so that Varese said a Goldsmith title would be issued. I
always hope for a Heavy Metal score - or from Goldsmith possibly Gremlins complete something
like that. But since I am a big Goldsmith fan I grabbed Runaway. His synth work is hit or miss...
I love stuff like Logan's Run but Runaway is so so. I still want it.
JackDVD78, November 6, 2006; 4:51 AM

I don´t like Runaway and would have prefered another title but i own it only as LP and so to complete my collection i purchased it. It´s much cheaper than bidding on it at ebay. I also ordered Birdman. As far as i know there´s only the Tsunami release with quite horrible artwork.

Well just the two for me this time round, Lucas and Runaway.
anthonynputson, November 6, 2006; 5:04 AM

I noticed not many have commented on Careful He Might Hear You.This score is probably,THE PICK of the 5 releases,it was released here in Australia by 1M1 cds,but went out of print. If you want a truly beautiful score ,BUY this cd before its gone. One of the best releases this year, along with the double Bruce Broughton release.
doloresh, November 6, 2006; 5:46 AM

Hello,
For me I would say the pick of this litter is "Birdman of Alcatraz". I also like "Seven Cities of Gold" and "careful, He Might Hear You". I even purchased "Lucas"(not a big fan of synth scores) because I don't have many Dave Grusin scores and I liked this movie alot when it first came out in the 80's. As for "Runaway"- not one of my favorites, I will pass on this one. I hope they will release better Goldsmith scores in the future as of late they are doing a great job with Bernstein.By the way what happened to Conti? I would have bet money that they would have had at least one conti score out of a five cd club release. I was thinking they might have released "The Karate Kid" (complete score), Maybe next time.
Best Regards,
David Phoenix, AZ.

I'll pick none. Again the releases are of movies i've never heard of, and not of the ones i was hoping for.
philkws, November 6, 2006; 7:45 AM

I just ordered RUNAWAY, but I'm considering LUCAS as well (...I hope Varèse is just warming us up for THE GOONIES with this one...:-)

Birdman Of Alcatraz is an excellent early 60's Bernstein score. I've had my vinyl pressing for years. Bought it in Chicago at Rose records. The CD looks pretty damn good.
Beautiful score for small orchestra. One of Elmer Bernsteins finest in my opinion.
victoravalentine, November 6, 2006; 10:51 AM

Quick question, I have decided to buy at least of the Varese releases. Which would you go with between "Birdman of Alcatraz" or "Lucas". I've never seen either movie, or heard music from either.
drakemarone, November 6, 2006; 11:26 AM

To drakemarone: never saw Lucas or have ever heard about, but i know Birdman by Frankenheimer: excellent film with excellent score. I would always vote for it.
To coma: why so pessimistic David. Varese surprises with lesser known scores. Not so bad at all IMO.

(drakemarone) I'd suggest the Bernstein score. Then again it's been one of my favorites for years. It's probably mono. The Grusin score looks great as well. Sound quality may be better than Birdman.
I'd say go for both of 'em!
(The vinyl pressing of Birdman was released in 500 numbered copies).
victoravalentine, November 6, 2006; 12:03 PM

workingwithknives, I might get both of them. The Lucas score is appealing to me, but with such rave reviews from others, it's hard not to want the Birdman score as well. Last thing I want to do is find out that they are both great scores and then pay out the wazoo for them from someone other than Varese. Guess I'm just gonna pony-up the dough. Lol.
drakemarone, November 6, 2006; 12:03 PM

If you enjoy "To Kill A Mockingbird" I don't think you would be dissapointed with the "Birdman Of Alcatraz" score.
victoravalentine, November 6, 2006; 12:05 PM

Most people are always disappointed. Their problem I say ! We others will enjoy the music.
The Bernstein release is a really cool news, something I hoped for for a loooooong time.
David: Just consider that there's been a Conti CD in each of the last 4 batches, which as far as I know no other composer has achieved in the club releases. And if you add that none of those CDs has sold out till now ...
I think the selection of composers was very well balanced this time. Not that I would be interested in all but I still say that.

I think you're right.
by the way, a complete (official) release of Airplane! and Airplane! 2 The Sequel by Bernstein would be a very nice club title...
philkws, November 6, 2006; 6:49 PM

i am happy for some of the choices, brings back memories for me at least. i was in the movie "lucas" for a brief glimpse, you blink and i am gone. i met gene simmons (around the same time of the films release, but he was not there for that) while he was promoting something, that was weird and cool at the same time. so i added "runaway", which replaces the cassette version.
so i wish they (varese) could read all our minds, and give us that score of all scores... thousands to choose from. they should have a poll to see which ones we as fans would like. give us a list of twenty or so and we pick 'em.

I know that we all have our personal favorites, we like something and dislike something else, some of us care for composers, some of us care for the quality of the involved movies, etc.
I just want to remind one thing to everybody: NO label can release *any* score they or you would like to. Licences, expenses, lost masters, etc. Hence we cannot see all we want.
Surely this limits the choice for the labels.

I ordered 3 of them and will no doubt pick up the other 2 along with an added back catalog Varese Club title, probably Hawaii or Home Alone 2, possibly one of the Goldsmith's I don't have.
I want Birdman and Lucas, just have to wait for Friday's paycheck to arrive in my account.

dspin24358, November 6, 2006; 9:09 PM

geesh... seven, careful, and runaway sold out. wow!
mikecee, November 7, 2006; 12:47 AM

SAE still has them all.
42zaphod, November 7, 2006; 8:14 AM

Hey, all.. I am new to the board, (obviously), and likely won't be posting often, as I am primarily only a fan of a few select scores. Dave Grusin's Lucas being offered on the Varese Sarabande prompted me to email them with a Goonies inquiry, (could it be a potential release, etc). Some say it never will see the light of day officially, but to my knowledge, Warner Bros. no longer owns score rights, GeffenRecords does. I want this music so bad!1 The so- called 18- minute suite not only doesn't cut it for me, but if you listen, none of it is taken directly from the film.. its beautiful, sure, but you have to remember it is William Motzing's conducting from a Grusin score. In any event, I am waiting on a reply from Varese.
Any thought s on The Goonies, whether it will ever be released, or whether we'll all have to continue to try to make our own shoddy rip of the stuff from the DVD soundtrack?(I'm guilty)
Talk to you all later.
