Question

What is your favorite Riz Ortolani score?

Hello,

I don't own many of his scores and would like to ask this question. What is your favorite score by Riz Ortolani?

Best Regards,
David Phoenix, AZ.

I've always loved his music for THE YELLOW ROLLS-ROYCE. Beautiful score and beautiful song... "Domani, forget domani...".

Another favourite of mine is his song for MONDO CANE, "Ti guarderĂ² nel cuore", aka "More". A true classic!

Angel

Hi David,
La Ragazza di nome Giulio (1970) aka A Girl called Jules, it's one of his best, but not on Soundtrack Collector yet...Also Il Giorni dell' Ira aka Day of Anger (soon an expanded edition to be released on GDM).

You can listen to some of his music here :

Not to say it was a favourite of mine, but the only Ortolani score I know is for the first season of LA PIOVRA (yes, the series for which Morricone scored almost all of the following seasons).

Can anyone characterize the music of GDM's upcoming DAY OF ANGER?

Regards,

Urs

"La Ragazza Di Trieste" is my favorite score from Riz Ortolani.

Favourites
1...Christopher Columbus
2...Days of Anger
3...Brother Sun Sister Moon
DAYS OF ANGER has predominent trumpet(shrieking at times) in Main Title and elsewhere, almost jazzy but vibrant...almost big band...think he tried to approach with an original flair(tried to avoid the Morricone style apparently).not typically western but includes electric guitar and 60's orchestra . almost like a big band style.
The second track on the original CD release (Senza Pieta)has music and sound effects like gunshots, footsteps and galloping hoofs...remind you of anyone...lol.
However, the most enduring and most beautiful music(absolutely haunting) is the Serene Night(Una Notte Serena)...trumpet and strings....later(the best)harmonica and strings and cicadas!...stunning and everlasting impression.Exceptionally sad and cathartic.
Bought the Lp in the late 60's and was surprised at the 'unwestern' Main Title and not Morricone style(though there are hints of Morricone pizzicato guitar and other sounds)but have since come to love and adore this western score...and now expanded ...WOW...more.
Listening to it now....love the main theme...blaring trumpets and plunking bass and rhythm.
Love it.Love it.

Women Of The World. As well as Christopher Columbus as mentioned above.

As for all around production value and taking into consideration cover design (as well as music) I'll mention the recent vinyl release from Cinedelic records of "So Sweet...So Perverse".

Great, great question, David.

I'll tell you a story....I live in Toronto, and all my life I've been watching TV from Buffalo, New York. A great fave of mine was Buffalo's WKBW-TV, Channel 7. Anyway, they used to show movies at 11:30 PM, and on Fridays it was common for them to air a horror film, usually something from Hammer. Since I was a child at the time this was gonna be the only night I'd be seeing 1:00 AM.

When the movie finished, a still image( I think technically called a tel-op slide) of a nighttime city skyline with the station's logo superimposed, came on with the announcer thanking viewers for watching "The Late Show" on Channel 7. The music played under this was so gorgeous, so rapturous, so memorable I could still hum it in my head 3 decades later.

I finally sent an e-mail about 5 years ago to Channel 7 management, thinking it impossible that they'd be able to answer the question of this music. (For all I knew it could have come from an obscure library, or something). To wrap this story up, a fella that had been there for 40 years told me without even having to think about it, that the music I loved so much was from the soundtrack album to...ready?..."The 7th Dawn"!

Needless to say, it's my favorite RizOrtolani. And a big, big thank you to Mark R. Hasan, who burned it onto CD for me from his old LP. Bless you Mark!
