Nicola Piovani = Ennio Morricone ?
Browsing through IMDB I have come across the following trivia:
"There was a rumour that Nicola Piovani is actually Ennio Morricone - This is wrong!"
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0003607/bio
Was there ever such a rumour ? It sounds ridiculous.

Rumors are common. Who the hell could possibly be dumb enough to believe Nicola Piovani and Ennio Morricone are one and the same?

I read that rumour about 15 years ago and almost believed it when I first started collecting Morricone. After all, he has used other names like Dan Savio, Leo Nichols, etc. But it didn't take me long to figure out their music didn't sound the same. I remember writing to the Morricone fan club in Holland about this rumour going around back then.

I met Nicola Piovani in 1996 at a Netherlands Filmfestival filmmusic seminar in Utrecht. I can
assure you he didn't look like Morricone at all. A very modest man, embarrased to be called "il
Maestro" by his staff. He didn't think there was a lot of time pressure in scoring films ('me
and my colleagues are fortunate, Vivaldi was supposed to deliver a concert each day,
Telemann even two, since 1800 musicians may be regarded as individuals and can breathe a
little'). At the time he considered 'La Notte di San Lorenzo' one of the highlights in his career.
Yet he thought it very strange (even insane) that the soundtrack album sold well. He
compared it to an exhibition of costumes from Fellini films. All of a sudden it's just clothes in
a showcase. To him only the endresult counts, the sum of the parts. I once heard that
Piovani started his career as a flute player in an orchestra that Morricone used, but I don't
know if that is another rumour.
