Oh my god, a Morricone live album! Unprecedented! ;-)

Do you know from which concert it is?

I wonder if that means that the delayed release of the concert 2CD "Musica per il cinema" might not materialize after all: http://www.internetbookshop.it/cd/ser/serdsp.asp?e=4029758780824

Urs

Serifiot, are you talking about this release posted on Intrada?

Besides the recent Trevor Jones Soncinemad Film Music Festival concert double CD release and the Cinefonia double CD release with John Scott conducting which I still haven't had the chance to purchase and not sure if they are still available, I cannot recall ever hearng about or listening to official live recordings from film composers since they are very few available I guess so this is exciting news at least to me.

Unprecedented or not, the Morricone double CD will be released by the end of January beginning of February.

I have noticed another official CD released in 1987 listed in SC's database with Ennio Morricone performing live.

There is also yet another more recent Morricone CD release from 2003 titled ''Arena Concerto'' with 12 tracks recorded live in Verona, Naples, Rome and Sevilla.
A 2 1/2 hour DVD release immediately followed titled ''Arena Concerto'' as well containing The Arena Concert in Verona, Italy which was recorded live on 28th September 2002.

Of course there was this interesting DVD release in 2005 with Jerry Goldsmith scoring ''The River Wild'' but it was not really a concert but a recording session.

There exists as well this official or bootleg rare double CD live recording with Charles Fox conducting in Japan titled "Jerry Goldsmith In Japan" since Goldsmith could not attend due to his illness.

I don't know if the upcoming double CD release is one live concert or various live performances and from where.

It is listed as up and coming from various retailers with slightly different release dates and track listings but they all must be announcing the DRG release.

I wonder if there are more CD or DVD releases with live performances from film composers than the ones mentioned?

The following link is Ennio Morricone conducting his 'Ecstacy Of Gold' presumably from Munich in 2005.

I certainly would be ecstatic if I was to attend Radio City Music Hall on February 3rd.

It would be truly something for all his fans if this concert was preserved and shown through syndication.

I was just joking a bit because Morricone's concert tour business seems to start to reduce his composing output at times. ;-)

There is the VOCI DAL SILENZIO 2CD of a Morricone concert from 2004 as well. It includes Morricone's 9/11 tribute movement of the same name (Voci...). This movement is included in the upcoming NYC concert as well (only the 2nd time Morricone will conduct it). The Munich concert from 2004 was recorded and released on a DVD (I think it's called "Morricone conducts Morricone").

I like the VOCI 2CD, although they could have put more music on it.

UPDATE: I forgot there's also the Sony Classical CD CINEMA CONCERTO - ENNIO MORRICONE AT SANTA CECILIA from 1998. Highly recommendable in my opinion.

Exactly, like the man needs to cut down on his world touring engagements to compose more film music since he has composed so little of it.

This genius of a composer has been a factory assembly line machine on full drive automatic for some time now bringing us some of the best, most diverse film music ever written.

I purchased two decently priced Moriconne cd's the other day out of sheer curiosity with scores to two films I never heard or seen before as far as I know, ''L'Istruttoria E Chiusa: Dimentichi'' & ''Il Serpente'' and one score to a film I am familiar with, ''The Sicilian Clan''.

Acoustically, ALL were different!...

Suprisingly, there were even weird and engrossing eery sound effects to say the least with strings being pulled, whispering voices and what have you on Dimentichi and slightly less on Il Serpente with some good music in between.

Far out and directly from Ennio's mad planet!

The Sicilian Clan, a memorable film score on a different level becomes instantaneously recognizable leaving its own unique ID tag behind once the score is over.

In any case, I loved all three!

Perhaps today *Il Maestro* might seem to be more interested and stimulated in touring and showing his musical genius through his concerts and less in scoring, even though I am pretty certain he composes music when he even performs bodily functions like dosing off to dreamland.

Lucky New Yorkers!

I have a lot of Morricone CD's to catch up on!

I will look into all the suggested ones Urs. Thanks!

Is Morricone the only film composer with LIVE performance CD/DVD releases for Pete's sake???!

Actually, this is a CD release of the Arena Concerto, recorded in the Arena in Verona (Italy)
on 28-09-2002. The DVD has been around for some time and can be purchased via Amazon
for a very pleasant price (but it contains less music than this 2 CD release, but also Sacco et
Vanzetti performed by Dulce Pontes that I don't see in the tracklist by Seriflot). A CD was also
released of this concerto and you can find it in the database of this site.

Since the music performed here is a little on the easy-listening side compared to the originals
I prefer the DVD-version so you can have a close look at the instruments used and see
Morricone stare at his sheetmusic (instead of looking at the orchestra). But for the
performance itself I would stick to the originals. Still Intrada offers the 2 CD's for a one CD-
price and it gives a nice overview of some of the better compositions by the maestro. But I
will stick to my cheap DVD and skip this release.

I prefer the DVD as well since I can listen to the music and watch the concert whenever I wish to do so.

It seems that the only film composer who has a DVD with a live concert performance is Morricone.

As far as the tracks I've listed, I don't think they are definitive. They were taken from play.com the place where I first noticed this double CD release, and by comparing play's track listing to the track listings I've seen provided by other retailers, they differ slightly as well as the release date.

No, there was a live Nino Rota concert in Japan 1976 - released in 1993 on CD!

And Nino Rota covered on that album Morricone's theme from A Fistful of Dollars!!!

But I believe Ennio Morricone is the only film composer ever to release his own concerts or DVD and already a Blu-ray!
