2001 Intrada Release !
Just got my cd yesterday of Alex North's original score and I am so thrilled with this release, I heard many comments on soundtrack blogs websites etc some said well I already own the Goldsmith re-recording of this, Yet it really isn’t even the same it is nite/ day. There is nothing wrong with the Goldsmith issue and there is certainly nothing wrong with Norths original session tapes on this new Intrada release! It is a whole new listening experience.
Also the liner notes are very well done! I wish Varese Club releases could come ½ as good as these are. In the past year or so Varese has slacked off on notes/ track comments and just over very bare-bones notes at best. This release should be purchased if you are a fan of 2001 or think you heard all on the previous Goldsmith.
I fyou haven't bought this cd yet you should! Those who have do you feel the same way ?

I cannot judge this new CD as I do not have it, but let me just cordially :-) add two important words to your post that are definitely missing:
ALEX NORTH

I have the Jerry Goldsmith re-recording hiding somewhere but I really would like to purchase Alex North's as well before it is gone.
Frankly I cannot remember the re-recorded music but if I'm not mistaken, I think there were many elements in North's music resembling the music which was finally used.
In any case, was Kubrick's decision not to use any of Alex North's score a wise one?
Do you think that the film would have had less of an impact if Alex North's music was finally used instead of the various classical music pieces?
Personally I believe 2001 would not be the same without Strauss but nevertheless I would love to see it with North's score as well.
The movie scenes seem to dance and glide along with the music from Strauss.
What a perfect match, absolutely engrossing and beautiful!

North's music is superb...
Anyway, I think the movie is perfect as it is. 2001 is Kubrick's, and he created a perfect soundtrack for the movie. Alex North composed a great score, but Kubrick decided to use another music. I think he took the right decission. He made 2001 just like he wanted to do it. And he created an absolute master piece.

They could bring out another DVD edition with an audio track that has the Alex North score. But that's very unlikely....
