RY COODER

In my quest to further explore unknown film composers, I stumbled on and purchased in a record store (remember those?) Ry Cooder's ''Last Man Standing'' released by Verve.

The old saying 'Don't Judge A Book By Its Cover' fits the occassion quite well since I haphahazardly purchased the cd soundtrack being sort of taken by the cover and without having ever viewed the film but I have no regrets.

I like to suprise myself once in a while.

Perhaps the music works very well within the context of the film but for some reason I was expecting to hear a different sound, something 'crime' jazzy and more lively.

In any case, the overall score is sort of subdued and relaxed with a few lively tracks in between.

I guess the music has grown on me and it will probably be a nice listen to take my summer siesta with.

Any thoughts on Ry Cooder and any recommended titles with his film music?

What are you fave, if any, film scores by this composer?

Actually, I do have ''Paris, Texas'' somewhere but I cannot remember the music on this one. If I'm not mistaken, it was more or less subdued as well?

ChEErs!

My favorite Ry Cooder score is JOHNNY HANDSOME.

I enjoyed Ry Cooder's music in the movie but, on disc, what a bore! As you point out there are a few lively tracks but you wait an eternity for them to arrive.

This was one disc I was happy to let go.

I'm not too taken with Elmer Bernstein's score (rejected) to this movie, though it does get the occasional air-time, but I have to concur with the comments of Pauk Tonks (http://www.musicfromthemovies.com/review.asp?ID=1485)
... how did they manage to replace EB's score with this one?

I've liked the odd Ry Cooder theme or track heard over the airways (e.g. some of his Cuban work is infectious) but I don't expect to add any of his albums to my collection.

I have never liked any of his movie works but I appreciate several other albums by Mr. Cooder. The way I kow it, his way of scoring is something what I'm not interested in at all.

However he's pretty versatile musician so he made several really good titles over the years.

Just about anything Ry Cooder does is tops. Check out Trespass, Alamo Bay and The End Of Violence.

All good!
