Nino Rota Inedits
There seems to exist this LP (ref. General Music #803030) which has some Rota's tracks from several scores that were later released on satisfactory CD editions but there is also a track from 8 1/2 (running 4'05'') which I don't believe is available on the CAM CD.
Could any owner of this LP please let me know if this track has 4 minutes of score not available on the CAM CD ? And if so, dare I ask, isn't it by any chance 'La Saraghina dance' ?
Thanks
Dorian

Hi Dorian,
I have this LP, but what Cam CD do you refer to? What does 'La Saraghina dance' sound like? I
haven't seen the film in ages.
Cheers

Hi Chris,
thanks for your answer. I think that all the CAM CDs contain the same 12 tracks -- just like the original LP. No track has the running time of 4'05'' there. Many of the tracks are variations of the main marching theme, but in the film there is also another theme (to which I refer as 'La Saraghina dance') which is barely heard on the CD: it surfaces few times very shortly in the "L'Harem" track (track 10, heard first from 1'09'' to 1'11'' and later from 1'56'' to 2'17''). La Saraghina is the fleshy (if such a word is politically correct) fair-haired lady who dances on the beach in the film being accompanied by a great version of this theme.
I would be glad to know if the track on the #803030 LP is the common 8 1/2 marching theme, or a suite, or perhaps this dance theme.
Thank you !
Dorian

Ah, no luck there. On the 'Nino Rota Inedits' LP is the same Main marching theme, just a
slightly different arrangement. The whole track is similar in content as on the 2CD-set 'Tutto
Fellini' Otto e Mezzo (4'27), only a different arrangement. I hope this was of any help.

Of course it was, Chris... thank you very much for the information !
I will keep on hoping that an expanded edition with the dance track will still come out one day.
Thanks again

Hi Dorian,
I was planning to do his earlier, but finaly found the time.
The GM LP is indeed a different arrangement that I could not find on any CD recording. It is a Carlo Savina arrangement but with more power. The brass is much more clear and the LP sound better. Personaly, it is my favorite arrangement of the theme. Strange the CDs don't have this arrangement and sound mix.
If you ever find a copy of the LP, I suggest you to buy it. There is one for sale on www.ebay.fr Only 8 euro on buy it now.
I love Nino Rota's music.
I have almost everything he did. and some obscure EP's from France have recordings conducted by Franco Ferrara or Nino Rota. These are the original recordings for the early films. The mastertapes were in a studio in Italy. But a fire years ago in the 60s destoyed all the tapes. Not just Rota. Rota is most famous for his Fellini films, but his other music is more interesting. Pity they did not copy the tapes at the time and kept some in another place. Nobody cares at that time I guess . They had no idea Carlo Savina would rerecord this music years later for compilation albums. Anyway, there is hope. CAM has the rights for the 8 1/2 music. And they have all the tapes. Since Digitmovies is doing some rare CAM material recently, this original score might see the light in a complete and remastered version one day.

The Saraghina rhumba is a song written by Walter G. Samuels and Leonard Whitcup in 1931 called Fiesta.
