DVD's with Isolated scores as a special feature?

Hello,

I don't own many dvd's myself and was wondering are there any dvd's that offer Isolated scores in thier special features section? scores that were never released on cd that are worth buying?

Best Regards,
David Phoenix, AZ.

This is a great idea for a thread, and one I've been wondering about myself as far as what I have in my collection containing isolated scores. Even movies for which there have been scores released on CD, an isolated music track on DVD is ALWAYS worth checking out simply because the recording sessions are quite different between what's recorded for the film's soundtrack and for an album....not to mention that on an isolated track you get ALL of the music cues recorded for a movie, and not just what's been chosen for an album/CD release.

Only ones I know I have off the top of my head are:

BEETLEJUICE (did my own CD rip from this one)

MARS ATTACKS (haven't done this one yet)

WAR OF THE WORLDS (1953, the original movie...the old laserdisc has an isolated music and effects track which I've been working on recently to rip as a CD)

Incidentally....there are places online which have downloads of the music from isolated DVD tracks, saving people the time and hassle of doing their own isolated rips.

In brief: Usually isolated scores on DVDs are extended, but there are very few examples of scores ONLY available on DVD. One is Jerry Goldsmith's ALIEN. For more DVDs including isolated score tracks, see http://soundtrackcollector.com/forum/displayquestion.php?topicid=8627

For a Golden Age fan, the 4DVD set of BEN-HUR is probably a must-have, as it includes both Miklós Rózsa's 120 minute original score (beware: as edited for the movie) AS WELL as all the 140 minutes of Carl Davis' 1987 score for the 1925 silent movie - both scores as isolated score tracks. Apart from that, it's a lavish set altogether ;-)

Regards,

Urs

UPDATE: For the isolated score on Discs 1 and 2, make sure you buy the Region 1 version.

Where is the isolated score on Ben Hur?
I have the 4 disc version too and I have looked high and low for it but have not found it. I have the region 4 version and this states an Isolated score as a feature so help me. Please.

About BEN-HUR.

AFAIK only the R1-Set features the isolated score !!!
Obviously it was dropped for all other regions or it is a very well hidden feature ..

.. Urs ??

Handstand, I assume by "score ONLY" you mean whatever was released as a soundtrack album?

As far as Carl Davis' score for the silent BEN-HUR....well, I have that on laserdisc and keep meaning to record it, since it IS a silent movie, that's all there is to the soundtrack of the video: The score only, naturally.

NOTE: I checked the database here and that listing for the BEN-HUR dvd simply indicates that the silent version is on one of the discs along with that particular film's score in stereo....so this is an instance of not quite the same thing as actually having an "isolated" score....because, as I said, it's a silent movie and the score is the ONLY sound/soundtrack.

about the European Ben Hur 4 disc set, it does NOT have the isolated score by Miklos Rozsa. They needed space on the discs for the various subtitles, and removed the isolated score. Unfortunately, they did not erase the info on the box, it was copied from the US version. In short, if you can do without the subtitles and you have a region free DVD player, you better buy the US version.

Yes, I did buy the Region 1 set of BEN-HUR because I read about the omission of the isolated score track on other Region codes. Also, the German version seems to come without the lavish vintage Ben-Hur booklet (the box is much thinner than the US one).

Had not mentioned this here again as it was in my link and also because I know David is in the US anyway. ;-)

Regarding the Carl Davis score, yes, it is obviously the full soundtrack reel of (DVD) Disc 3, not an "isolated" music track in the strict sense of the word, but in this case the full soundtrack on the DVD consists - by definition - exclusively of music, so I think it gives you the same value as the isolated score on Discs 1 and 2. I ripped both scores from the three DVD discs and made a nice 4 CD-R set from it complete with my own artwork.

What about DVDs where a score CD is included. I just purchased Lucio Fulci's ONE ON TOP OF THE OTHER (aka PERVERSION STORY) (from Severin) and it came with a second disc which was the score CD. There have been a couple from No Shame where a score CD did not exist but is now available via their special edition DVD.

The Anchor Bay special edition of SUSPIRIA and the reedited NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD 30TH ANNIVERSARY edition both had score CD's included.

The Dark Crystal region 1 DVD has an isolated score. Absolutely brilliant stuff, one of my fav. scores.

Isolated scores on DVDs are in the midst of a drought, after early DVDs took more advantage of the format's storage capacity. Fox has been the only studio label with the odd title of late, which includes Deadfall (John Barry). The upcoming Other Side of Midnight (Michel Legrand) is supposed to feature a music & effects track.

As I had stated in another recent thread pertaining to the same topic, it would be an absolute dream come true for all film music afficionados and an honorable doing for all the people involved in a film's music production if every single DVD release had an isolated score track as part of their basic features list just like subtitles. Wishful thinking!

Small correction from my end: Fox's release of Cinderella Liberty will have an isolated music & effects track, not The Other Side of Midnight.

Mark - your www.kqek.com/isolated_scores is awesome - thank you for compiling that info. It gets tedious emailing laserdisc sellers on Ebay if their discs have isolated music tracks (just to find out - I don't have a laserdisc player). The next step if finding someone who has (or is willing to make) a cd transfer of it.

Btw, I posted your link over at the FSM message board. Several people had some additions to your list - you might want to check out the thread:

Don't know if anyone has mentioned this before, but anyone who despairs at the music available on CD for Trevor Jones' The Last of The Mohicans should go out and get a copy of the Region 2 DVD. The isolated score is sensational, especially hearing the ten-minute piece as Nathaniel and Chingachgook race up the mountain after Magua... and its very easy to stick on a CD for your listening pleasure.
Tis a shame no-one has bothered to release the actual score proper on CD, as it would surely sell a bucketload...??

Well, why would they bother with the time and expense of releasing a CD when the score is already on DVD as an isolated track....and anyone can burn their own CD from it?

kriegerg69, March 10, 2007; 11:41 PM

Glad the isolated score/composer commentary pages are of use & interest. I've elaborated on the pages in my blog, but in a nutshell, I've set up a way on the section's main page to email any further info, so that the section can continue to grow with more laserdisc and DVD titles that keep popping up.
