Re.: Database contributions
Hi guys,
some users have complaint in the past that their contributions are either lost or still not processed after more than a year.
And although Ton has perfectly explained why these delays occur I thought about the following scenario and please forgive if this has been suggested in the past.
Well, here in Europe we have not only some shops run by people who love movie scores as well - at least I hope so :)
Backtrack, CineMusique, Chris, Rosebud, Tarantula, etc.
but also some fanzines like Musicfromthemovies.
In combination these people see more CDs on their desks than anybody else !!
So, wouldn' t it be an idea that they get access to the contributions and if, say, 3 or 4 are independentely confirming that a Soundtrack really exists and is legit (*) then it could be uploaded without further delay ??
Would that work ?
Regards
(*) Of course, this could touch grey areas like in the recent IN 80 DAYS incident but as long as their are no lawsuits ....
I am thinking more of the perfectly looking boots from Germany which could be regarded as legit if one don't have the knowledge.

I know some of these stores and their owners and I presume, they have better things to do,
than checking releases. If they had so much spare time, we would have been able to greet
some of them here already.
And the problem is not so much the actual release schedule. I'm submitting quite some
informations, and Ton adds these very fast.
So relax and enjoy this site and its constant growth of information.

***** I did not know Ciné Musique
a question: do they sell only new cd ?
thanks

I'm with you on this one, David,
"So relax and enjoy this site and its constant growth of information."
This site remains the best ... long may it be so.
Mitch, March 15, 2007; 8:47 AM

Exactly, that's what I meant - you seem to be trusted by SCC so your informations are up very fast.
I only know that I submitted FAUSTO 5.0 more than a year ago and it is still not up - so I gave up !!
:-(
Why should some of the 'professionals' not spent 1 hour or so per week to check some things ??
An item added fast could generate sales as a return !

I've been there a few times during the 90s. I remember seeing lots of CDs on sale, but I can't remember if they were selling used CDs as well.
I do remember purchasing a few hard-to-find CDs there, though. They also had vinyl soundtracks in one corner of the shop.
f.ditalia, March 15, 2007; 8:59 AM

I agree with the complaints....I've been saying for several years now that Ton NEEDS to get some help with the site. I've also had submissions which took a YEAR to be processed.....so what's the point of having a soundtrack reference database when it's always taking way too long for the information to be processed?
I seriously don't understand why no additional help is gotten in working on the site....Ton, what IS the problem with that? GET SOME HELP and things will work out much faster.
kriegerg69, March 15, 2007; 9:10 AM

A quick answer to everyone.
Look carefully to the database from time to time, and everyone can see that (almost) all the new releases are added very quickly to the database. New releases have priority and everyone can see that this is the most actual site with that.
See also New Releases on the home page.
That means that there is less time left to do all the other additions, updates and covers of older releases. It indeed can take some time to process these contributions.
The suggestion to involve other people does not work.
When we started SC about 7 years ago, people had much more freedom to do all kind of things in the database.
We had the illusion that our visitors were as serious as we are. Totally wrong!
We had to stop that very soon, because the (much smaller then) database turned into a mess. A good example is the possibility to add a tracklist that still exist. Every frequent visitor of the site has seen one or more of those "funny" tracklists done by "funny" people.
This is a very expensive site. We had to move to our own dedicated server because we grew to much for a normal server.
Yet the site is still free, and that means that we have to work with volunteers.
Happily there are several members who we trust and who get priority with their remarks. But please don't think that we don't trust the other members, but we had to make a choice.
We are working on a system like I described here, but that also will take some time.
A thread like this is posted here from time to time, followed by the same discussion. If someone has a complaint or a question, please send us a mail. You will get an answer by returning e-mail.

I am sorry, but even on new/recent releases you are somewhat behind :
Marmorera
Maetressen
Caja Kovak
Saw 3 (2 CD-Set)
Piano Works (Craig Armstrong, DVD)
Ports of Paradise (Alfred Newman, could be a NOST)
Gole! (Rick Wakeman, CD)
Rosario Tijeras
...
...
Well, it was just an idea. Sigh.

kleinludwig, you forgot the Saw II 2-CD-set, released nearly a year ago....
philkws, March 15, 2007; 11:52 AM

kleinludwig.
Why don't you go to another site if you have so many complaints?
ton.werkman, March 15, 2007; 1:28 PM

I've accumulated much information by using this site and would like to suggest that everyone stand and give the guys in the Netherlands a big round of applause!
Okay, now sit down and shut up.
victoravalentine, March 15, 2007; 4:12 PM

I think kleinludwig has raised a point that is to be taken seriously. Given that I submitted some rare releases (CD+DVD sets from the now defunct "mediacs" DVD label) now two years rather than one year ago, I can only come to the conclusion that they have been either been evaluated not worthy to be included in the database or it has not been possible to verify them. Whilst that might be ok as an action, I would like to at least get an automaticized notification that the submissions were turned down.
I wrote to the owners of the site twice, politely asking if anything was wrong with my submissions or if I could help with additional information on the releases, but never got any response. Again, it's ok if Ton cannot respond to everything, but an automatic notification if a submission was rejected would settle the matter easily.
Eventually, I hope that the tone on this website doesn't reach FSM board level. kleinludwig made his point most politely and did not give reasons for the patronizing and spiteful responses he got.
Regards,
Urs

Oh well guys ...
... whatever I decide now to do - one last thing.
I am now a member for more than 5 years and in all these years I always thought that this is the greatest place to meet people sharing the same passion; open to discuss all possible subjects.
But obviously I am wrong. I would have never expected to see remarks on the niveau of Ford Thaxton like "go to another site", "run your own site" or even "shut up".
This is a very sad day.

goldsmithsonian, March 15, 2007; 6:43 PM

Ludwig,
I fear this thread has lead to a deplorable disaccord. Neither my remark, nor the one from
knives - as I understand it - was meant as a personal insult.
Cheerz,
David
PS: Don't think that you're the only one waiting for submissions to appear on this site. It's all
just a matter of confidence and patience.
coma, March 15, 2007; 7:25 PM

Hi David,
thanks for your kind words.
You know, the funny thing is I really do not care that much if my FAUSTO 5.0 contrib ever shows up. I did the best I could by submitting the respective details - now it's up to SC.
Especially the second sentence in my original post should make clear that my thread was more than good-natured and not an attack on SC.
It was just an idea to maybe help to improve SC's performance regarding the database.
Maybe it was indeed a silly idea but I can not remember anybody else come up with any suggestions lately so I at least expected a more serious discussion instead of "now-let's-bash-this-Kraut".
This is especially sad because as of this summer I am in the great position to work at home and could have easily become a "power-submitter" based on my 3000+ collection.
Last but not least, the guys of SC are surely the Unsong-Heroes when it comes to movie scores !!
But this does not mean that I will accept every behaviour towards me.
Best wishes
PS:
I also would like to recommend to refrain from phrases because not everybody in the world can easily understand them as such.
"now sit down and shut up" may be a common phrase in the USA or wherever but I can only consider it as an insult.
goldsmithsonian, March 15, 2007; 10:36 PM

"now-let's-bash-this-Kraut"??
NO ONE ever said anything even REMOTELY like that....Why the hell would you even make a comment like that?
"New releases have priority"? Sorry, but that's rather lame, especially since so many NEW releases are just crap, and the older titles are the tried and true CLASSICS.....and they should be given just as much priority.
