THE HOBBIT (1978) soundtrack on CD???
With all of the hoopla surrounding the recent LOTR films, is anyone going to release the original soundtrack to the 1978 animated version of THE HOBBIT on CD? I would LOVE to see that soundtrack get a proper CD release, as that film is one of my all-time favorites and the music & songs are outstanding! Is this just an impossible dream? Does anyone have any info about a pending release?

Although I don't own that CD, I'm very sure I have seen it offered from some of the Soundtrack specialty retailers that have web sites....or at least, I think I have. You have checked all of them, right?
Good luck!

I don't know of any pending release, but I do have the soundtrack in 2 versions, so if you want to trade, just email me.

A copy of the Green Cover version of The Hobbit soundtrack is for sale on ebay every once in awhile by the archivist for Rankin/Bass. It was the LP version burned onto a CD. The archivist is selling one right now on ebay, but the auction ends tomorrow. No one has bid on it!! (Bidding starts at $9.99.) The reason why I haven't bid on it is because just a few minutes ago the auction ended for another Green Cover, and I won! If you want, you can snag the one on ebay for $15.99 (Buy It Now), but the one I got, I won for $15.00. Hope you guys see this post in time!

Follow up to that last post. I just received it in the mail yesterday. Even though it's a CD-R with scribblings on the CD, the quality is still just fine. (As a matter of fact, when the CD starts playing, you can hear the crackling sound from the record before the music starts. That brings back memories!!) At the end of the 13 tracks are interviews with R/B production people, including Mr. Rankin himself. (I've only listened to the first two tracks; there are 7-8 more after that.) Along with the CD, you get the sheet music for some of the songs, but they aren't professionally bound or anything. The green cover itself is a copy of the LP cover.
Now that I know what you get, I would suggest to anyone else wishing to get the green cover CD on ebay, the $15.99 Buy It Now may not be worth it. I'm still very pleased with the product, but I'm thinking $15 was a little wasteful on my part. I wasn't sure how many copies the archivist was going to sell. All I would've had to do was let the other bidder get it for $14.50, then I could've bid $9.99 on the other one.
The way it looks now, there's a tad more interest in the soundtrack, so the archivist is starting to post more of them. My suggestion is to take it at $9.99 if possible, but probably no more than $13.00 or so once the bidding gets going. With any luck, once everything gets squared away with the two new movies, when the first one comes out in 2010 there'll be enough of an interest they'll get the soundtracks professionally done and sell them on Amazon.
Info overload? Probably.
