Question

Where to buy from... habits and practices

In the FUNHOUSE thread, I just posted a question that has always puzzled me. It's not just this forum, I've seen it else where. Here's my question based on the FUNHOUSE thread:

When a person asks about getting a soundtrack they will mention that it was produced by Screen Archives or Intrada etc. In the FUNHOUSE example it is mentioned that "Intrada" produced the CD and is selling it. Someone else chimes in and suggests buying it from BuySountrax.com. Why buy a CD that was produced by Intrada from someone else? Following that thread the person ended up buying the CD from Screen Archives. Yeah, Intrada still sold the CD but it's something I have always been curious about.

If people get burned by an etailer then that is a good reason to buy elsewhere...but I haven't heard anyone complain about Intrada's service (or Screen Archives for that matter).

Anyone have an answer/opinion?

Intrada is one of the finest company I know. The service is just perfect.
I can't speak for other people but in case the CD is still available I almost always buy CDs from the producer's store (if there is one).

Well I know that for me it usually comes down to a couple of factors:

Selection: I want to one stop shop. If I can order everything from one place than they will get my business.

Price: Generally this is not a big issue as most outlets have the same of similar pricing.

Shipping: This for me is not as big of a deal but I know for many it can be. The shipping a company charges can make some people choose one outlet over another.

Those are the main reasons I could think of but there are others like customer service and loyalty.

Personally, I usually prefer to buy Intrada's CDs from Screen Archives, but my motive is purely financial (I love both stores/labels!). Because I live in California, and Intrada is also based in California, I have to pay sales tax when I order directly from Intrada's web store, but since Screen Archives is not located in California, I don't have to pay sales tax when I order from them. Saves me a few bucks each time. If it weren't for the sales tax I'd order from Intrada every time, because they ship very quickly and I receive my packages from them within a couple of days (as opposed to 7-10 days from Screen Archives).

Ah, taxes! I can understand that! I'm in California too, didn't think about it that way. I can literally walk into Intrada and purchase my CDs, so no "shipping" charge for me.

Hey, maybe someday Intrada will open up a shop here in San Diego... *wink wink*

One can always dream...

Intrada is not a retail chain. Intrada, Screen Archives, Varese Sarabande all produce their own product. Varese Club CDs are cheaper to buy through the club vs buying them from some other source.

It used to be that it was cheaper to buy the FSM titles directly from FSM. Now the price is the same no matter where you buy it. I used to buy my FSM title directly from FSM (to support them). But then they started shipping to places like Intrada, Screen Archives etc before they fulfilled their "charter members" orders. I could walk into Intrada and buy the FSM title for $5.00 more before the one I had coming arrived! It was frustrating to support FSM and yet have them sell to someone else before their "supporters" had received their CDs. The Varese Club did the same thing too!

When comparing prices at a retailer, you're right, I want the best price. So again, why would someone pay more for an item that they coud get cheaper from the source?

My FSM experience is another reason why I started this thread. I am curious about why we do what we do as collectors.

Sometimes retailers sell film music soundtracks cheaper than the 'source' Mark.

The bottom line for me is the cheapest soundtrack price and the cheapest shipping charges.

If I find a limited release (brand new & sealed) at a retailer for a fraction of the price it will cost me at the official record label website, I will jump on it with no hesitation.

I have purchased most of my FSM titles brand new and sealed from other retailers which were sold for much less than what FSM used to sell them at.

Purchasing a brand new & sealed FSM limited title for 12 bucks and even less is substantial savings especially when you decide to purchase 20 FSM titles all at once.

Unfortunately FSM titles cannot be found at such prices anymore (perhaps Amazon) since Screen Archives took over.

If you guys know of an internet retailer that sells FSM titles for much less than what it would cost at Screen Archives' website, please let us know.

Cheers!

AGREED! :)

Why buy a CD that was produced by Intrada from someone else?
And why not?

Reasons: Shipping prices (i.e. intrada & fsm count a 2cd album as 2 discs, while others not), availability, to combine it with another CD, because the other shop offers you a discount, or you are a bit lazy and don't want to open a new customer account in another shop, ...

kriegerg69, you must be a pretty insecure person if you need to insult people to defend your arguments or to convince yourself that you're not what you think others consider you.

I didn't call you stupid (kriegerg69), I just made a statement.

There are some people 'out there' think they are.
