1976 - Assult On Precint 13 - CD

Hello Soundtrack Collectors,

I was wondering, do any of you have the 1976 soundtrack to Assult On Precint 13 by John Carpenter that has a running time of 24min 36sec (16 tracks), and my question is: Is this the complete recordings?

If it doesn't contain all the music, do any of you out there know how much music is in the film? I haven't seen the film for a couple of years.

I am about to buy it, but I have heard on a John Carpenter website, that there is a bootleg with 23 tracks, and I am not sure if the soundtrack has officially been released??

Any details will be most thankful, and I thankyou in advance.

THANKYOU!!!!

The music on the LD isolated (all music) was barely 30 minutes long. The CD represents all the music from the film. IIRC the LD was around 20+ track but it broke some of the combined tracks into shorter versions with abrupt stops and starts.

Hi Paul,

Being a Carpenter soundtrack fanatic since the very, very early 80's, I of course immediately bought the LD with isolated score when it came out and ripped it (to tape, at that time, lol).

The complete score clocked in at 39 minutes, and the release of Record Makers years later was (is) 24 minutes long. So there are about 15 minutes "missing".

BUT... The score consists of only 2 basic themes and some ambient sounds/drones. ALL of the "important" variations of the themes are on the Record Makers release. On the complete score there are countless repetitions of single sounds/tones.

I took a lot of time to compare the two. As a carpenter sound fanatic, believe me when i tell you that there is absolutely NO reason to have a "complete" release of the score. All of it is there on the official release. The "missing" 15 minutes are only repetitions - there is nothing more there. As a matter of fact, as a listening experience, even the official release becomes almost too long and repetitive.

Also, the sound quality on the official release is top notch. All boots are LD/DVD rips with close to no dynamics and background noise.

Slightly drifting off topic, i would LOVE to see a complete release of THE FOG some time (but this probably won't happen, as they released a co-called "expanded edition" on Silva Screen some moons ago). The released versions are both "spiced-up" re-recordings (many overdubs) that omitted a lot of the themes i loved in the movie. Just my two cents :-)

Best,
Burnie
