Question

Cinemania Funky Japanese Soundtracks etc

This is probably specific to erictyee who seems to be expert in this field: I recently purchased 'Stray Cat Rock', 'Nikkatsu New Action 1968-71' & 'Gangland War' - I've noticed there are a series of comps titled 'Cinemania' - firstly do they double up track wise with the titles I have bought and are they from the 60's & 70's - I'm not terribly interested in stuff released after. I would also like to thank erictyee for providing information on this relatively unknown genre outside of Japan - knowledge like this is what makes this site invaluable to soundtrack collecting.

Any help would be appreciated
Dominic

Go Cinemania series, a must have!

Hey Dominic!

I have all nine volumes of the Cinemania series, and actually posted some info about them along time ago. Actually alot of the tracks on the Hotwax "Stray Cat Rock", and "Nikkatsu New Action" originally appeared on the Cinemania collections. If you like the Hotwax stuff, I suggest you buy Go Cinemania vol. "Screaming A Go Go" which contains music not only from a whole slew of Nikkatsu films, but also the only source for some BGM cues from the "Female Prisoner Scorpion 701 series" (one track per film). Go Cinemania Vol 3. "Take a Walk on the Psychedelic Side" as a bunch of tracks from "Nora Neko Rock" (all on the Hotwax release) but includes other cool tracks like the title theme from the very first Nora Neko Rock film "Female Boss". The song is sung by pop star and lead actress Akkio Wada. Another gem on that disc is a track from the film "Bad Girl Mako" a Nikkatsu film staring Junko Natsu, whose claim to fame was staring in 3 "Girls Junior High School" films (there are also some tracks from those films as well). Discs #'s six "New Tastement of G.S. souree" and nine "Mera Mera Mera: group sounds" concentrates on songs by "Group Sounds" (Japanese Garage bands) that appear in films. If your a fan of Japanese group such as the Spiders, Jaguars, The Flowers, Ox, etc. then this is disc for you. Some of these groups like the Spiders and Jaguars actually starred in these slapstick films and if your a Monkees TV show fan (like I am) then these films are for you. Also some of the rock groups music from the Nora Neko Rock films are on this disc also. Go Cinemania #1 "Punch the Guy" contains some jazzy some action music from spy/crime films. Volumes #5 "Erotic Capricco" contains some decent music from Nikkatsu 70's Roman Porno films and makes a great addition to the Hotwax Roman Porno title and the VAP disc "Roman-Porno Sound Collage Sadistic and Masochistic." If you liked the Hotwax "Gangland War" disc then you'll love Go Cinemania Vol 8: "Style to Kill" which concentrates on Nikkatsu films from the same period (late 50's to mid 60's). Finally I have no advice on Vols 2 "Young Turks" and Vol 7. "le bande Cinema Grand Cru", although I own them I have never listened to them and both are still sealed (I know some of you other collectors must also have a bunch of CD's that you've bought and haven't listened to yet either!).
Dominic,
If you haven't yet already (and before they go out of print) you should try to get ahold of some volumes of the "Toei Masterworks Collection". In this series of discs, each volume concentrates on a single actor, and contains COMPLETE scores to several films. Here are the volumes I would recommend picking up: both vols of the Tatsuo Umemiya contain the complete scores to four of his "Delinquent Boss" films--Japanese swastika wearing biker gangs going berzerk! Great stuff from the early 70s! The volume called "Toei Adult film" contains the complete score for the second "Girl Boss" film called "Girl Boss Blues" it starred both Reiko Ike and Miki Sugimoto and was the sequel before "Girl Boss Guerrila". It is a 2 disc set and has two other scores from films I'm not familiar with (yet). The first volume of the Ken Takakura set is nothing short of amazing with the complete scores for the Yakuza classic "Abashiri Prison" and the live action "Golgo 13". All three volumes of the Junko Fuji set are worth picking up as they have the complete scores to her many "Hibotan Bakuto" (Red Peony) films about the female Yakuza gambler named Oryu. Finally a must have is the Tomisaburo "Lone Wolf" Wakayama double disc which contains the complete scores to four of his "Gokudo" Yakuza films including "Gokudo vs the Delinquent Boss"! Thanks Dominic!

Oh, I forgot to mention that the Cinemania titles can be ordered from Amazon Japan and CD Japan. The Toei masterworks titles can be ordered from Amazon Japan and Ark Square. I also just noticed that the Hotwax titles can now be ordered from Movie Groove in the UK!!!!

P.S. You can also buy Hotwax titles from Dusty Groove, for almost HALF the price that they are listed for at Movie Grooves:

I have to give praise to Movie Grooves for providing sound samples, though!

Otokichi.com has one copy of "Screaming a Go-Go" in stock for a reasonable price:

I cannot recommend this album highly enough. Definitely one of my all-time favorite Japsploitation soundtrack compilations. Funky, nasty, groovy, and sexy as hell! Also, most tracks are instrumental, which for me is preferred.

American Nightmare,

Yes, I noticed that Movies Grooves charged alot for them. However, I did mention it just to show that other places now carry Hotwax. I did mention in a previous thread (a few months ago) that Dusty Grooves carrys them. I usually buy mine from Amazon Japan so I can get them near the actual release date.

eric,

It's cool, man, you're not on trial. No need to explain or get defensive. ;-)

Josh,

No problem here, didn't mean to sound defensive.

OK, cool, and by the way, thanks for sharing all of this info with us.

Cinemania

Thank you eric. I made my purchae through Movie Grooves. It's true Movie Grooves can be expensive but they do have a very extensive stock & the customer service is excellent. When postage & packaging are taken in consideration, Ultra Vybe comps from Movie Grooves are approximately £6-00 more for UK buyers. The other plus of Movie Grooves is most of their stock can be sampled. I buy from Movie Grooves & not Dusty Groove because I live in the UK and am never sure what the duty threshold is. This concern does deter me from buying Cds from Japan. I wonder if anyone else from the UK could put my mind at ease re: this. I will google this, but first hand knowledge is always preferred. Thank you to all those who contributed to my post.

I agree with you Dominic. Col and Co. are second to none when it comes to customer service. I just wish they would open up a branch here in the US so I could save on shipping!

The duty threshold in the UK was £18 (GBP) the last I heard. Its not so much the VAT that's the problem. Its the £4 charge by the Royal Mail or £8+ for other carriers for presenting to Customs. On a small purchase its a steep curve as you hit the limit. The 17.5% VAT ends up being doubled effectively. So buy small or buy plenty !

Bumping this thread up with a little update :)

What would be cool is now to write next to each line what are actually on the CDs... need to work on that, but
quite hard since I can't read japanese :/

Anyways, check my list below (hope it helps to fill in your collections hehehe):

Btw, I'm just noticing that ABCS-1012 seems to be also part of ABCS-1039... and ABCS-1006 part of ABCS-1040... (though, I'm not sure if they are complete on both ABCS-1039 and 1040)
