What Score Were You Surprised to Find Disappointing?

Surely most everyone has looked forward to getting their hands on some score only to find that the listening experience was not quite what they anticipated. For me, that score is "Mutiny on the Bounty." No doubt this says more about me than Mr. Kaper, but try as I might, I still find it a difficult slog. (Uh, no, I'm not ready to part ways with it just yet.)
So, what have you eagerly looked forward to acquiring, then regretted buying?

Listening to X-MEN: THE LAST STAND was the most devastating experience to me in that department. Powell's BOURNE SUPREMACY is perhaps my favourite score of this decade and I expected something even better when I heard Powell was about to score part III of the X-Men series, but what I got to listen was just a dissonant messy cacophony in THE LAST STAND. Physically painful. A nightmare!

I would have go with "Deja Vu". What a disapointment. And I generally like Williams' work, just not this time.

Hello,

Great question, I'm sure alot of collectors will strongly disagree with my answer to this post. For me the one scores that comes to mind is the Ennio Morricone score "Moses The Lawgiver". I find it long and boring and I'm glad I was able to listen to it before shelling out the big bucks to purchase it on Ebay. When it comes to a religious epic score give me a score by Rozsa, Newman, or Bernstein. As far as Morricone goes I really like alot of his other scores alot so It's not anything agaist him as a film composer, He's one of the best. By the way I like the "Mutiny on the Bounty" score alot, Go figure?

Best Regards,
David Phoenix, AZ.

War of the Worlds by John Williams. I think Williams is great and I like SF films. Usually he does
great things for Spielberg, but I found War of the Worlds very uninteresting to listen to.

I share all of your feelings about the scores you mentioned.

I have struggled to 'get' into MUTINY so far, but would never part with it either - the whole presentation of this set is just overwhelming. MOSES does have quite harsh and almost unlistenable parts with a few gorgeous tracks in between, but given I never had this score in any other form before, I am still glad I own it (the 2CD set). I did not find anything enjoyable in WAR OF THE WORLDS either, but then again I seldom fall for aggressive and jarring action music (see my original post...).

I believe I only bear the use of brass when it's John Barry or the Maestro who have composed and conducted them ;-)

Morricone's "Vatel"? Not quite sure.

I have not seen the movie as of yet but I was expecting something like Fenton's wonderful film score from "Dangerous Liaisons".

Great film!

Perhaps I should give it a few more spins on my cd palyer.

John Ottman's score for SUPERMAN RETURNS was mostly a rehash of John Willliams' music from the first movie in 1978....hardly an ounce of originality here. Why even bother crediting Ottman when the score was clearly all rehashed Williams material?

Very disappointed with that one....loved the movie, though.

I was deeply dissapointed when I heard the score of BABEL of Gustavo Santaolalla, some of the tracks were very repetitive, I was bored a couple of minutes later when hearing each of one of those tracks.

And some others were just simply noise! The only tracks I liked were: Tribal, Two Worlds One Heart, and Deportation/Iguazu.

I know that the "Iguazu" cue was very repetitive but it was very soothing.

I LIKE MUCH BETTER, Santaolalla's score for BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN. It's a very beautiful score
