Longterm CD storage (not on shelves)
I started a project several months ago to rip most of my film score collection to MP3 with the objective of putting most if not all of those MP3 files onto an iPod. I'm in the home stretch but need some advice. As of last night, I've ripped 1038 titles. Some of these are multi-CD sets like the 6CD Goldsmith at Fox set, the Stu Phillips Battlestar Galactica 4 CD set, or the various Star Wars 2 disc sets. I'm putting all of this music onto an 80GB iPod. I have just about 3.1GB left free. I have not added album art to all of the files as yet and I know that will take up some space. I'm going to concentrate on the artwork next. The music is stored on the iPod and on the hard drive that I have been ripping to. A third copy is made to a separate external hard drive for backup purposes. I'm pleased. I've been ripping at 192kbps in MP3 format and am not looking to get into a format benefit discussion.
My question actually revolves around long term storage of the CDs. I still have them in their jewel cases and for now I am not looking for a storage solution that involves removing them from their cases. For now, they are sitting in some U-Haul boxes that are holding them two discs deep. I want to address two concerns. One, I would like to put them into some sort of sealable (aka water repellent) container since they are currently on the floor in the basement. Two, I would like to have them be in some containers that could store them one deep rather than two deep. I've been looking at various offerings from Rubbermaid, Tupperware, etc. and haven't quite found what I want.
Does anyone on here do anything like this and can you provide a specific suggestion as to a model of container I could get several of to store my collection in? I don't expect to need to pull CDs out too often, but when I do, I would like to be able to get to a specific disc rather quickly and without muss or fuss.
Thanks very much for any and all suggestions.
