Question

How did you begin your collection?

I'd like to ask members how they began their collection (adiction)to film music.

For me it began in 1959 when as a schoolkid we were taken to the cinema to see the roadshow release of William Wylers BEN-HUR. This was my first visit to BIG cinema. The place was packed and the noise just incredible but when Miklos Rozsas' majisterial overture began you could have heard a pin drop and then when the curtains pulled back to reveal the size of the screen the gasps from the audience was electric.

Fast forward to 1962 to when I stated work. I had money in my pocket and time on my hands so I began to visit the cinema regularly after work sometimes catching 2 films before I got home.
Whilst out window shopping oned day just before Christmas I spotted in a record store window the sleeve to LAWRENCE OF ARABIA. I had just seen the film that week and the Lawrence theme had haunted me all week. I didn't even know you could get the original soundtrack. So I went in and found the 'films and shows' selection and there was LAWRENCE OF ARABIA and BEN-HUR. I bought them on the spot even though i did not have e record player at the time to play them on (I had to persuade my parents to buy me one for my birthday). That was 45 years ago and I'm still collecting

In 1968 when I got my first job. Bought Planet of the Apes after seeing the movie and spotting it at the Oberlin College Book store. Only place back then for miles around to buy records. After that picked up The Robe, and boxed sets of Ben Hur and King of Kings. My 3 all time favorites then and to this day. Also picked up a boxed set of the complete broadway production of Hamlet w/Richard Burton. Only way I would ever hear that in my lifetime.

It all sounds familiar...same... being collecting soundtracks since the 60's...heaps of LPs.
How The West Was Won, Ben Hur and The Hallelujah Trail got me fixed on film music and the rousing choral and vocal stuff.
Yep....and along came Lawrence , Doctor Zhivago , Grand Prix and those Bond and Matt Helm movies , and the inevitable finding of film music in record shops...wow.
Of course had to work in a record shop during school holidays to keep up with the film score releases....being in a small town meant the occasional visits to the cities and the big shops...whew...out went the cash and up went the temperature.
And it still continues....the world market and releases, more departed cash and continued excitement....have loved the older released soundtracks to enjoy again.
Yep and on it goes....lol.

One of my favorite memories is being at a junk store one day and staring down at a copy of "The Wild Side Of Henry Mancini". A vinyl recording from 1961 of the "Touch Of Evil" score released in 1000 DJ copies. Features music not released on the commercial LP.

Varese Sarabande combined the two LP's for their release.

Anyway, it was 50 cents in near mint condition.
