The Long Ships CD on FCM

Has anyone had the misfortune to listen to this release (FSM0811). It's so bad it is
embarrassing. Seemingly taken from the Colpix mono LP release, we played it next to the Colpix
Stero LP (SCP-517), and it was 'chalk and cheese' - the LP blew this CD out of the water... so to
speak. Do not purchase this CD issue if you are after a quality recording. Cheers, Dennis

So much for the higher quality of Compact Discs. I always find it hard to listen to a recording on CD if it was originally issed on the vinyl format.

I noticed the same thing once by comparing the sound quality of the Varese Sarabande vinyl reissue (Now Citadel CD) of Destination Moon over the original pressing on Omega Disc (an old top drawer American vinyl label from the 50's).

Yes, so true working - quite a lot of CD-soundtrack-based releases have a lot to answer for as far
as quality goes.

Whilst I do not know this particlaur recording (in either format) I am aware that I have more than a few CDs, purchased to replace earlier vinyl recordings, which have disappointed me with their "inferior" sound.

I can suggest Jerry Goldsmith's Under Fire and Nino Rota's Musiche Da Film ... both wonderful abums ... where the CD sound leaves something to be desired.

But then I heard from various sources many years ago that the sound from a good vinyl source will always beat that from a good CD source. The convenience, lack of scratches, etc. generally give the CD the edge, though CDs are not totally fault-less.

I would suggest, however, that if you have invested a large amount of funds in building a CD collection that you do not skimp on the hardware. I have found that a hi-fi set-up consisting of good quality CD player, amp, speakers, etc. rewards the listener with much, much better playback performance.

The trouble is, once you know that those silver discs can sound so much better when played on good quality equipment, there is a temptation to want to improve again and again.
