The new Varèse CD Club titles are out..!
22-Nov-2004 - Here are the new titles in the Varèse CD Club. To lead off the final set of CD Club releases for 2004 comes this Deluxe Edition of The Agony And The Ecstasy (1965), one of the great historical epic film scores of the 1960s. The symphonic score came from Alex North who produced a stirringly emotional and thrilling score that ranks with the all-time greats. Also featuring on this CD a documentary prologue to be shown before The Agony And The Ecstasy. Titled The Artist Who Did Not Want To Paint, the twelve and a half minute documentary had a score by the not-yet-legendary Jerry Goldsmith. Another classic is Three Coins In The Fountain (1954), the classic story of three loves, which has just been released by 20th Century Fox on DVD and now, for the first time, Victor Young’s beguiling score finally sees the light of day. It's a score that displays Young's skills as both a composer and an arranger. The successful songwriting team of Sammy Kahn and Jule Styne came up with a strong pop song based on the title Three Coins in the Fountain. They delivered a classic and it was incorporated into Young’s own score. The long out of print Varèse Sarabande soundtrack for Sheena (1984)becomes the latest of their CD Club titles to make a brief curtain call by way of this very limited edition. Maybe the Tanya Roberts epic is not (yet?) a classic like the other titles here but it features a very beautiful and heroic score by composer Richard Hartley.
