The new Varèse Sarabande CD Club titles...
22-Aug-2005 - Varèse Sarabande has released 5 new CD Club titles on 4 CD's. With so few of his scores ever released as soundtracks, Bill Conti’s career is ripe for re-discovery with F.I.S.T. and Slow Dancing In the Big City, a pair of long lost scores from 1978 representing some of his earliest and best work. Performed by the London Symphony Orchestra the composer’s cues for F.I.S.T. bristle with a sort of Hollywood Golden Age bravado. Slow Dancing In The Big City afforded Conti the opportunity to indulge his talents in everything from Latin flavored jazz (the frenetic “T.C. Salsa”) to the lengthy, classically rooted dance centerpiece Balletto.
From the Varèse archives comes The Kindred, a little-known early work by David Newman which displays the command over symphonic forces he would later get to exhibit on much larger pictures. Newman’s third feature film score scarcely belies his relative newcomer status, even as its mature, accomplished orchestral-electronic cues underscore his years of training, performance and session work.
A Georges Delerue classic, True Confessions, comes to CD for the first time. The Robert DeNiro/Robert Duvall film inspired Delerue to compose one of his most hauntingly beautiful and spiritual works. The score's liturgical choral touches may echo the film's setting and themes, but they also underscore the adjective most often used to describe the elusive character of the composer's music: mystical.
Another classic Elmer Bernstein score joins the CD Club with the “at long last” release of his 1983 score to the 3-D production Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone. A powerful and adventurous score, this was Bernstein’s valiant contribution to the post Star Wars science fiction craze. The score is an enormous amount of fun and has long been one of the most requested works from one of the composer’s most exciting creative periods.
