WSA discovery Gustavo Santaolalla nominated for Oscar
7-Feb-2006 - That the World Soundtrack Academy, an initiative of the Flanders International Film Festival - Ghent, obviously has an eye for talent when it comes to film music has once again been confirmed by this year's Oscar nominations. The most conspicuous example of this is the nomination received by the Argentine composer Gustavo Santaolalla, winner of the title of WSA Discovery of the Year in 2004. Following his acclaimed soundtracks for Amores Perros, 21 Grams and The Motorcycle Diaries, he showed at last year's World Soundtrack Awards that he is also a gifted musician in his own right, when, joined by the Flemish Radio Orchestra, he gave the première performance of the music from Ang Lee's - eight-times Oscar-nominated - latest film, Brokeback Mountain.

Another composer of film music who has visited the Festival in Ghent and now has an Oscar nomination to his name is Alberto Iglesias. His soundtrack for Fernando Meirelles's The Constant Gardener is one of the hot favourites in this year's Oscar race. As recently as 2004, Iglesias was nominated for the title of Soundtrack Composer of the Year for the music he wrote for Petro Almodovar's La Mala Educación, but on that occasion he just missed the top prize. Will he be luckier this time round? We will find out the answer at the Oscars ceremony on March 5.
