Born on August 14, 1893, in Vienna, Austria.

He grew up in Berlin, where he became a violinist and conductor. In the 1920s music he composed for the theatre and for silent films. He became internationally known through his compositions for S. M. Eisenstein's Bronenosec "Potemkin" and Oktjabr', Arnold Fanck's Der heilige Berg and especially Walther Ruttmann's Berlin. Die Sinfonie der Grossstadt. Early in 1930 he recorded a sound-version of Bronenosec "Potemkin". After finishing the music for Il'ja Trauberg's Goluboj Ekspress he died on November 14, 1930 in Berlin, Germany.
