Biography
Hans J. Salter was born in Vienna, Austria on January 14, 1896, gained his education from the Vienna Academy Of Music, and studied composition with Alban Berg, Franz Schreker, and others. He was Music Director of the State Opera in Berlin before being hired to compose music at UFA studios. Salter emigrated to America in 1937 and was quickly put under contract at Universal, where he worked for nearly 30 years, arranging, composing, conducting, and serving as musical director. He composed for other studios and for television, and was nominated for a number of Academy Awards, including Christmas Holiday and This Love Of Ours. Some of his other film music was written for Beau Geste, Black Friday, Black Horse Canyon, Creature From The Black Lagoon, Day Of The Bad Man, Frenchie, The Ghost Of Frankenstein, His Butler's Sister, If A Man Answers, Invisible Agent, Magnificent Doll, The Man In The Net, The Mole People, The Prince Who Was A Thief, Raw Wind In Eden, Ride A Crooked Trail, Scarlet Street, The Spoilers, Wild Heritage, The Wolf Man, You Never Can Tell, and the television shows Dick Powell Presents, Maya, and Wichita Town. Salter died in Studio City, California on July 23, 1994, at the age of 98.
